BEFORE WE BEGIN. This game is split into two portions: skimming and scanning. Improving these skills allows you to evaluate and consume information more effectively in real-world situations.

SKIMMING. Quickly look across the text and identify important words or ideas. It's fine to skip lines if they don't seem important.

SCANNING. Keep the information you're looking for in the front of your mind and move rapidly through the text to identify where it's likely to occur.

TIP: The type of content generally important in skimming is bolded.

โ—๏ธ Heads-up: To make most of this game, try setting a timer and reading the text in skimming within 45 seconds. Same for scanning part of the game. After having read the text, you can move on to the questions in skimming. In scanning, only 15 seconds are given to find the answer to the question from the text.

THE BIRTH OF ANESTHESIA

Imagine a time before anesthesia, when every patient who underwent surgery did so fully conscious and aware. Though early forms of anesthesia were discovered in the late 18th century, it took another 50 years before they were used to relieve pain during surgery with any regularity. William T.G. Morton, a Boston dentist, pioneered the use of ether as an anesthesia. Together with surgeon John Collins Warren, they performed demonstation of anesthesia in 1846.

Before ether, patients were sometimes given herbs, wine, or opium. These drugs fogged the mind but did little to stop pain. Surgeons rarely operated on the abdomen, chest, or skull, as these areas were too dangerous to attempt. Patients were often strapped down to prevent movement, and speed was among the surgeon's most valued traits.

Local anesthetics were introduced in the late 1800s. Spinal and epidural anesthesia were developed soon after, along with the introduction of endotracheal tubes to regulate breathing during surgery. Intravenous anesthetics were developed in the 1930s, increasing the range of surgeries that could be safely performed and making painful operations largely a thing of the past.
