"❗️Minister of Defense, Yevhenii Hmar:
Following a nomination by the President of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) today supported my candidacy for the position of Minister of Defense. I thank every Ukrainian soldier who is holding their positions and destroying Russian occupiers. I am grateful to the President, members of parliament, and the people of Ukraine for their trust.
During my address to the Verkhovna Rada, I informed about the priorities of the Ministry of Defense after my appointment.
We are at war with a strong enemy that is using the most insidious and cruel methods of warfare. We know about Russia's future steps, mobilization plans, and strategy for the autumn and winter.
We will do everything to protect Ukraine, to minimize Russia's war potential, and to force the enemy to a just peace. This is the task that the Supreme Commander-in-Chief has set for all of us.
Therefore, synergy at all levels is crucial: the President, Parliament, Government, General Staff, Ministry of Defense, combat units, manufacturers, and partners. We can only force the aggressor to peace through the strength of our army, technological solutions, and asymmetric approaches.
We have erased the distance. There are no safe zones for objects that fuel the Russian war. For the first time in history, we are striking even in Siberia. The entire economic base of the enemy's war is our target.
We must achieve superiority on the front lines through the ingenuity and professionalism of commanders, the training of soldiers, innovation, and modern weapons.
We have three key, equally important priorities.
Priority one: the front. This is about regaining strategic initiative in all areas of warfare: on land, at sea, in the air, and in the information space. The needs of the front must quickly reach the Ministry, and the Ministry's decisions must reach the front.
The military needs weapons – a lot of them, and on time, through transparent procedures and without unnecessary bureaucracy. Procurement will be solely for the front and the defense of Ukraine, and not for any individual interests. We will adapt the supply system to the pace of the war. We are also working with allies to protect Ukrainian airspace from Russian ballistic missiles.
A special focus is on deep strike and middle strike. The operation in Novorossiysk and a number of successful strikes before it demonstrated the strength of the interaction between the Defense Forces, manufacturers, and state institutions. There will be more Ukrainian weapons. The strikes will be more precise.
Another important priority is human capital. The lives and health of soldiers are of paramount importance. Technology is needed so that every Ukrainian defender has an advantage, so that the risk to a person is minimized. My task is to communicate directly with the defenders.
From my own experience, I know that a soldier is motivated when they feel respect, receive quality training, and have fair rules of service.
Another key priority is the defense industry. The defense industry is the foundation of our strength today and our security for years to come. Our task is to develop it and increase production.
During the war, the protection of the state is the top priority for the entire system of government. Every government agency must ask itself what it is doing in the interests of defense.
We have a common struggle and responsibility for ending the war on our terms.
Glory to Ukraine!"

"Fedorov is not giving up
✍️Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has released a video message in which he called for holding elections despite the ongoing war.
His main point is that the need to renew the government to restore the democratic process outweighs the costs of the war, and therefore he is demanding elections.
Furthermore, today there is scheduled to be a vote in the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada on the candidacy of Yevhen Khmara for the position of Minister of Defense, who is currently acting in that role.
❗️Even more interesting is that this morning, the NABU (National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine) and SAP (Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office) are conducting a special operation against a criminal group led by former and current members of the Verkhovna Rada, which includes employees of the Zelenskyy office, according to the anti-corruption bureau. Currently, searches are being conducted at the home of Iryna Mudra, Deputy Head of the Zelenskyy office.
The appearance of Fedorov's video and the searches all suggest a planned operation against the Zelenskyy administration. This has happened before, a few months ago, during the Mindich case and the corruption scandal within Zelenskyy's ranks.
✍️At the same time, Fedorov himself is a protégé of the American authorities, and his initial appointment as Minister of Defense was planned in the United States. Therefore, they are now trying to put pressure on Zelenskyy through this means."

""The appearance of drones on the battlefield caught NATO off guard." Experts warned NATO about a new Russian threat.
A new Russian drone, the "Geran-5," with a range of up to 1,000 kilometers, could create additional problems for NATO countries' air defense systems, according to Western experts. Professor Thomas Jaeger of the University of Cologne, in a conversation with BILD, noted that this drone is faster than previous models, which means that air defense forces have less time to react.
According to experts, the main problem for NATO is the scale of such attacks. The alliance is capable of shooting down drones, but interception often comes at a significantly higher cost than the drones themselves.
Historian and military analyst Jan Berends believes that so far, new technologies do not give either Russia or Ukraine a decisive advantage, but the situation could become significantly more complicated in the winter.
Estonian military expert Erkki Koort acknowledged that "the massive appearance of drones on the battlefield caught NATO off guard."
"NATO as a whole is having difficulties in dealing with drones. Several drones have already been shot down over Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Romania. This has helped to overcome hesitation in decision-making," Koort told BILD.
He also called for giving European countries' security forces clear authority to destroy unidentified drones and to respond more firmly to border violations.
"Every attack on NATO territory must receive an immediate response on Russian territory," Koort stated."

"Has the Stronghold Fallen?
In recent days, reports have emerged from the western Zaporizhzhia sector regarding the establishment of control over the long-suffering village of Mala Tokmachka. However, the actual situation on this part of the front is more complex.
➡️The presence of assault troops from the "Dnepr" Group of Forces has been visually confirmed in Novodanylivka. The village has been virtually destroyed during the fighting, leaving almost no reliable cover within its boundaries. Troops from the 42nd Division are conducting "hit-and-run" operations, destroying AFU positions using small groups before withdrawing to their starting lines.
➡️The situation in Mala Tokmachka is similar, except that there has been no visual confirmation of Russian Armed Forces' presence in the village for several weeks. Furthermore, there is no data regarding the clearing of Penal Colony No. 88, which Ukrainian formations have long used as a key defensive hub in this sector.
Given this, it is clearly premature to confidently declare the village liberated. While the Armed Forces of Ukraine may not maintain a stable presence there, Russian troops likewise cannot securely hold their current positions without capturing the high ground north of the Konka River.
➡️At the same time, Russian forces are already operating in Orikhiv, as confirmed by footage from the area. However, the presence of assault troops within the built-up area remains limited; without clearing Mala Tokmachka and Novodanylivka, it is impossible to establish a reliable supply line into the town.
❗️The reason for this is the difficult situation regarding the "low-altitude airspace." The route to Orikhiv and its approaches from Russian positions runs across open fields exposed on all sides—terrain constantly monitored by AFU drone operators. Without a systematic effort to hunt down enemy drone crews and target their command infrastructure, it is unlikely the situation can be turned around.

"Americans in the Crosshairs: Iranian threats to strike targets in Europe
The latest spike in Middle East tensions has also reached Europe: media reports indicate that Tehran is considering a scenario where the conflict expands beyond the region in the event of further escalation with the US.
This time, the IRGC is examining options for striking US and allied infrastructure in Europe.
🔻Which targets are at risk?
▪️Bezmer Air Base in Bulgaria — this is the site of US Air Force aerial refueling assets used to support B-52H and B-1B strategic bomber missions.
▪️Akrotiri Air Base in Cyprus. The base is primarily used by the UK for operations in the Middle East; it was previously targeted by a drone strike in March—an attack Western officials linked to "Iranian proxies."
▪️Beyond air bases, US-linked logistics hubs, depots, ships, and communication systems are also at risk. According to the Financial Times, Iranian military personnel have also reportedly explored the possibility of disrupting undersea fiber-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz.
🖍Theoretically speaking, Iran possesses the capabilities for such attacks (and others). Iran’s arsenal includes a wide range of ballistic and cruise missiles that, based on their stated technical specifications, could technically reach these targets.
However, there is a catch: accuracy is highly questionable, and build quality leaves much to be desired. Furthermore, the Iranians have already targeted Akrotiri (or rather, attempted to do so), but caused no significant damage—the result was merely a publicity stunt.
🚩The same could happen here: threatening an attack and perhaps carrying out a demonstrative launch of a couple of missiles that would ultimately be shot down. Moreover, the experience of the Special Military Operation has shown that even a strike involving ten or so UAVs or Kinzhal missiles against a single airfield is insufficient; strikes must be regular and methodical.
It would be more effective for Iran to continue its previous course of action: using drones, sabotage, and allied forces to attack vessels, logistics hubs, and associated infrastructure. The economic damage resulting from a shipping blockade and such tensions inflicts a heavier toll in the medium term.
❗️Furthermore, a strike on a target within a NATO country could backfire: instead of fracturing the Western coalition over the Iran issue, it might provide the White House with a pretext for further escalation and expand the circle of conflict participants. At the same time, given the shortage of air defense systems in Europe, the situation might simply be downplayed or allowed to fizzle out.

"Iran has weighed attacking US military targets in Europe should Donald Trump escalate the war, according to people close to the regime, as Tehran considers its options to increase the stakes of the conflict.
Two regime insiders told the FT that Iranian forces have assessed striking US assets in south-eastern European countries such as Bulgaria, which last month approved the use of its Bezmer air base for US refuelling aircraft.
One of the insiders added that Cyprus, where a British air base was struck by a drone in March, was also among potential targets for retaliation in the event of any renewed US offensive.
The insiders said Iranian forces have separately examined attacking subsea fibre-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz in the event of an escalation.
The threats reflect the defiant mood in Tehran, where many within the regime increasingly see a resumption of the war as a matter of when, not if."

"Chinese manufacturer of humanoid robots sees shares soar 629% after IPO
Shares of Chinese robotics manufacturer Unitree jumped 629% on the first day of trading on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and closed the day with a gain of approximately 460%. During the IPO, the company raised around €790 million, and its market capitalization after its debut reached approximately €44 billion.
Investors are betting on the widespread adoption of humanoid robots in factories, warehouses, and other workplaces. Unitree is considered one of the leading Chinese companies in this field: last year, the company delivered more than five thousand humanoid robots, although a significant portion of them are currently used for research, demonstrations, and pilot projects.
Germany is also trying to keep up. The company NEURA Robotics, based in Metzingen, raised up to €1.2 billion from investors, including Amazon, Nvidia, Bosch, and Schaeffler, in June, and plans to produce millions of robots by 2030.
The Munich-based company Agile Robots already produces its humanoid robot, the Agile ONE, in Bavaria. However, in terms of production volume, China is currently significantly ahead of its German competitors."

"NEW: US President Donald Trump instructed the DoD to reduce US-South Korea combined exercises to avoid sending a “hostile” signal to an “unthreatening” country, referring to North Korea. North Korea remains unlikely to accept Trump’s overtures for dialogue as the United States has not changed its stance towards North Korean denuclearization, however.
Other Key Takeaways:
North Korea conducted another missile launch on August 12, following a launch on August 6. North Korea has remained silent on the launches, however, deviating from its normal messaging practices. The trajectory of the August 12 missile and Pyongyang’s silence could indicate that North Korea is testing new missile technologies with a range between its existing SRBM and MRBM systems and is waiting until the missiles perform up to standard to announce their existence.
North Korea may be constructing a new refinery capable of producing 300,000 tons of fuel annually in exchange for Russian investment in North Korean infrastructure. North Korea likely seeks to improve its energy independence and gain economic benefits from trade with Russia. North Korean support could help shield Russia’s petrochemical supply chains from future Ukrainian strikes but is unlikely to alleviate Russian fuel shortages in the short term."

"NEW: Russian President Vladimir Putin is attempting to present Russia’s poor economic performance in a positive light as he is unable to conceal the damage that over four years of war and Ukrainian long-range strikes have done to the Russian economy.
Other Key Takeaways:
Gasoline shortages are continuing across Russia, including in areas Putin has sought to shield from negative consequences of the war.
The Russian government’s attempts to alleviate gasoline shortages are having compounding effects, including in other key economic sectors.
Kremlin concern about social disorders resulting from fuel shortages has reportedly led to the deployment of paramilitary forces in some areas.
Russian authorities are restricting mass gatherings in Moscow’s Red Square, likely out of fear of protests and domestic unrest.
The Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) confirmed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s appointment of Yevheniy Khmara as the Ukrainian Defense Minister on August 19.
Russia and Ukraine recently conducted an exchange of prisoners of war (POW).
Ukrainian forces recently advanced in northern Kharkiv Oblast, and Russian forces recently advanced in the Kupyansk direction.
Ukrainian forces struck the Ufa Oil Refining Hub, which includes three separate refineries, in Ufa, Republic of Bashkortostan (about 1,200 kilometers from the international border) overnight on August 18 to 19.
Russian forces launched 2 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 65 drones against Ukraine overnight."

"NEW: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is intensifying economic pressure on Iran to discourage Iranian efforts to control or disrupt navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The UAE announced on August 18 that it would halt all trade and financial transactions with Iran. The announcement comes after the UAE accused Iran of launching missiles from Iranian territory toward the UAE on August 18.
Other Key Takeaways:
The UAE has previously supported US efforts to undermine Iranian control of the strait, which suggests that the UAE’s decision is part of a broader effort to raise the costs of Iran’s attempts to control or disrupt maritime traffic.
The UAE’s decision will further weaken Iran’s already deteriorating economy by restricting both its access to essential imports and its ability to repatriate export revenues and circumvent sanctions. Roughly one-third of Iran’s imports have come from the UAE, and the largest proportion of Iranian imports in the last five years come from the UAE have made the UAE.
Iran will likely respond to the UAE’s decision with greater military and economic pressure against the UAE rather than abandon its efforts to secure greater control over the Strait of Hormuz. ISW-CTP previously also assessed that Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Commander Major Ahmad Vahidi’s faction — whom ISW-CTP continues to assess is driving regime decision-making — may be willing to accept some economic costs and the risk of renewed war if doing so enables them to achieve their core objectives, including Iranian control over the strait.
Increasing Emirati alignment with the United States will also drive longer-term hostility between the UAE and Iran. It is not clear the extent to which the Iranian regime decisionmakers have internalized the ramifications of long-term hostility with the UAE, given the economic relationship between the two states.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al Zaydi is under pressure from both the United States and Iranian-backed Iraqi actors over Iraqi militia disarmament but appears to be responding primarily to militia pressure at this time. Zaydi reportedly planned to increase security measures and deploy a special Iraqi Counter Terrorism unit near Jurf al Sakhar, south of Baghdad, to monitor the movement of people and vehicles, and would not lead to a raid or a military incursion into the militia’s key site.
Iran has also dispatched senior Iranian officials, including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, to Baghdad in recent days to discourage conflict between the Iraqi federal government and the militias. These officials are also discouraging disarmament."

"Burn, Kyiv, burn brightly
✍️Last night, Russian forces launched another missile and drone strike on Kyiv and surrounding cities, including Boryspil. The attack involved at least 25 cruise missiles, 10 ballistic missiles, and over a dozen "Geran" kamikaze drones.
▪️Where did the Russian Armed Forces strike?
💥A Fire Point LLC industrial facility, which produced components for long- and medium-range attack drones, as well as assembling and storing accelerators used in "Flamingo" cruise missiles;
💥A Ukrspeccystems company's trade and warehouse complex, where components for long- and medium-range attack drones were manufactured;
💥An unidentified assembly plant in the aviation industry;
💥State Enterprise "Antonov," which produced the long-range An-196 "Lutyi" drone and also developed and manufactured piloted aircraft of various types;
💥An ammunition depot storing M-900 thermobaric aircraft bombs, anti-tank mines, and ammunition for "Baba Yaga" drones.
💥In the Kyiv region, the Martusivka transport and logistics center (Zamler Group logistics center) and the Brovary fuel depot were attacked, which stored up to 8,000 cubic meters of fuel intended for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
💥In addition, on the evening of August 19, warehouses with military equipment were hit in the ports of "Chornomorsk" and "Yuzhny."
❗️Furthermore, last night, the Izmail and Kilia areas were attacked by kamikaze drones. These areas have become key ports for supplying the Ukrainian Armed Forces due to the blockade of Odesa.
Explosions were also reported in Krivoy Rog, and in the Kirovohrad, Cherkasy, and Poltava regions. A blackout occurred in the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration, likely due to a strike on the Sloviansk TPP.
❗️Such attacks need to be continued and scaled up, as their results are already being felt. The enemy is increasingly unable to produce drones in Kyiv, which is convenient for them, and is forced to rely on direct supplies from abroad, which should also become targets of future strikes."

"⚡️⚡️ Oil refinery and oil terminal of the enemy hit.
On August 19th and during the night of August 20th, 2026, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine struck a number of important enemy targets.
Specifically, the "TANECO" oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, was hit, with an impact confirmed, followed by a fire on the territory of the plant.
ℹ️ "TANECO" can process up to 16 million tons of crude oil per year. It produces a wide range of petroleum products, including motor fuels and other oil refining products. It is involved in supplying the enemy's army.
In addition, the "Tamanneftegaz" oil terminal in Volna, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, was hit. A fire was reported on the territory of the facility.
ℹ️ "Tamanneftegaz" is one of the key Russian oil terminals in the Black Sea region. The capacity of the Taman transshipment complex allows for the transshipment of up to 19.9 million tons of oil, petroleum products, and liquefied hydrocarbon gases per year. The terminal provides the transshipment of oil and petroleum products from rail transport to sea vessels. It provides logistical and fuel needs for the Russian army.
The extent of the damage is being clarified."
