BAC TSR-2 (XR219) in powered flight

While the XR220 and XR222 are preserved at Cosford RAF Museum and Duxford Imperial War Museum respectively, unfortunately the XR219 did not survive the political processes.

In the late 1950s, the USSR introduced its first SAMs which made high-altitude bombers such as the EE Canberra very vulnerable. The British felt that the most appropriate response to this threat was a strike aircraft able to carry nuclear ordnance, Mach 1.2 capable on deck and Mach 2 at altitude, with STOL or VTOL performance
