UPDATE: Mountain Home Air Force Base, located about 55 miles southeast of Boise, was hosting its Gunfighter Skies air show on Sunday when the lockdown began. Shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time, social media posts from the base reported that it had been locked down.

In a follow-up post, officials said an “aircraft incident” had occurred, emergency crews were on scene, and “an investigation is underway.”

The Idaho Statesman reports that emergency rescue crews were responding to the base for a crash. An announcer informed attendees that four crew members were able to eject with “four good parachutes,” the outlet noted.

Scientists discover ‘holy grail’ of genes that could regrow human limbs, living tissue - NYP

It sounds like science fiction, but scientists may have just taken a giant step toward a future where amputees regrow real limbs.

Researchers studying axolotl salamanders, zebrafish and mice say they’ve uncovered a powerful set of genes that appear to control regeneration itself.

The breakthrough, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could one day help scientists develop therapies that regrow living tissue, bone and even entire arms and legs in humans.

“This significant research brought together three labs, working across three organisms to compare regeneration,” said Wake Forest University biologist Josh Currie, whose lab studies the Mexican axoloti salamander, in Science Daily. “It showed us that there are universal, unifying genetic programs that are driving regeneration in very different types of organisms, salamanders, zebrafish and mice.”

The project also included Duke University plastic surgeon David A. Brown, who studies digit regeneration in mice, and Kenneth D. Poss of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, whose research focuses on fin regeneration in zebrafish.

Axolotls — a type of salamander — are famous for their extraordinary ability to regrow entire limbs along with tails, spinal cord tissue, and parts of organs including the heart, brain, lungs and liver.

Zebrafish can repeatedly regrow damaged tail fins. Their bodies are also capable of repairing the heart, brain, spinal cord, kidneys, retinas and pancreas.

Mice were included because, like humans, they’re mammals.

Mice can regenerate the tips of their digits, and humans can sometimes regrow fingertips if the nailbed remains intact after injury, allowing skin, flesh and bone to regenerate.

Cuba confirms CIA Director John Ratcliffe has met with officials in Havana -- JTN

Cuba confirmed Thursday that CIA Director John Ratcliffe has met with Cuban officials in Havana this week as the island nation grapples with a collapse of its energy sector.

Cuba said the meeting was held at the request of the United States government and that officials emphasized in the meeting that Cuba does not pose a "threat to the national security of the U.S."

“Following the request submitted by the US government that a delegation presided over by CIA Director John Ratcliffe be received in Havana, the Revolutionary Directorate approved the realization of this visit and the meeting with its counterpart from the Ministry of the Interior,” Cuba said in a statement.

The island nation also said its officials emphasized that there are no “legitimate reasons” to include Cuba on the U.S.’s list of State Sponsors of Terrorism because it does not harbor, support or fund terrorists, according to CNN.

The meeting comes a day after Cuban Minister of Energy and Mines Vicente de la O Levy said Cuba has run out of oil for its power plants and supplies have been exhausted.

“We have absolutely no fuel oil, absolutely no diesel,” de la O Levy said Wednesday. “In Havana, the blackouts today exceed 20 or 22 hours.”
Cuba used to receive its oil from Venezuela virtually for free prior to the U.S. removing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Since January, the U.S. has blocked shipments of oil, which has resulted in blackouts lasting 22 hours per day in some parts of Havana.
