Some in Congress are now openly calling for the breakup of Russia.

Yesterday, the US government’s Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, or Helsinki Commission, held a Congressional briefing titled "Decolonizing Russia". Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN) opened up the presentation, which may be the first in a series, by claiming that Russians “have in essence colonized their own country,” arguing that Russia is “not a strict nation, in the sense that we’ve known in the past.”

Present at the meeting was also Casey Michel, who last month authored a piece in The Atlantic titled "Decolonize Russia" and which seems to have been the impetus for the briefing. According to Michel, decolonizing Russia is not solely about "partitioning" and "dismembering" the Russian Federation, but about a supposed authentic commitment to "anti-imperialism."

Which countries would the proponents of this idea like to carve out of Russia? The meeting mentioned Chechnya, Tatarstan, Dagestan, and Circassia. Siberia is to be divided into several Republics.

As we've highlighted in a previous post, some voices in the US/NATO camp have adopted a pro-Balkanization line with respect to the Russian Federation, just as the West sought the breakup of Yugoslavia some 30 years ago. What differs today is the openness with which this is advocated. The language of "decolonization" smudges over what are, in effect, old neo-conservative talking points and foreign policy positions. It's "woke"/"intersectional" neo-conservatism.

Not a U.S. proxy war? Ukraine is crawling with special forces and CIA agents, NYT reveals.

In an article titled "Commando Network Coordinates Flow of Weapons in Ukraine," anonymous western officials admit that the U.S. is operating “a stealthy network of commandos and spies,” to provide Ukraine with weapons, intelligence and training.

Also working alongside the Americans inside Ukraine are a few dozen commandos from other NATO countries, including Britain, France, Canada and Lithuania.

But the scope of the operation extends far beyond the territory of Ukraine, with much of the activities taking place at bases in Germany, France and Britain.

White House officials are losing confidence that Ukraine will ever be able to take back the land it has lost to Russia.

Advisers to President Joe Biden have begun debating internally how and whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should shift his definition of a Ukrainian "victory" — adjusting for the possibility that his country has shrunk irreversibly.

The growing pessimism comes as Biden is meeting with US allies in Europe, where he will try to convey strength and optimism about the trajectory of the war as he rallies leaders to stay committed to arming and supporting Ukraine amid the brutal fight.

The mood has shifted over the last several weeks, though, as Ukraine has struggled to repel Russia's advances in the Donbas and has suffered staggering troop losses, reaching as many as 100 soldiers per day. Ukrainian forces are also burning through their equipment and ammunition faster than the West can provide and train them on new, NATO-standard weapons systems.

A US military official and a source familiar with Western intelligence agreed it was unlikely that Ukraine would be able to mass the force necessary to reclaim all of the territory lost to Russia during the fighting

Internally, there is a sense among some in the Biden administration that Zelensky will need to start moderating expectations for what Ukrainian forces can realistically achieve.

Zelensky asks the U.S. to recognize Russia as a terrorist state, following what he calls a “calculated strike” on a shopping mall in Kremenchuk.

“The Russian state has become the largest terrorist organization in the world. And this is a fact. And this must be a legal fact. And everyone in the world must know that buying or transporting Russian oil, maintaining contacts with Russian banks, paying taxes and customs duties to the Russian state means giving money to terrorists,” said the Ukrainian president in his nightly video address.

Russia has denied targeting the mall, saying that it struck a nearby industrial facility used to store Western-supplied munitions. According to the Russian version of events, the shopping center was closed at the time of the attack and burned down due to a subsequent fire that erupted and spread from the plant.
