I had an epiphany today. We are grading around the greenhouse and I gotta remove dirt. So the question is how to know how many inches of dirt I have left to remove with my laser level and the "beep beep ding ding" receiver? It only reads UP or DOWN within 1inch of level.

So it occured to me that I have a telscoping grade rod. If I turn it upside down and clip the receiver to the fattest portion of it, I can push it down telescoping the smaller portion into the larger part. Read the scale on it to know the difference.

Example: extend the smallest section of the grade rod fully and facing down. Attach the beeper to the fatter portion. To measure go where you need to measure the earth, push down on the rod and make it compress. When the beep goes solid, read the number of inches it compressed.

This lady makes some good points. No matter what your local power company's marketing department says, they are in the business of selling electricity. When solar was a cutsie little minor annoying thing in the 70's they could afford to treat it like playing peek-a-boo with a toddler. In fairness to the power companies though, I must say that grid tied solar has reached a point in some markets like Hawaii where the grid acts like a car with a stuck throttle. At least if the power companies own the solar farm, they can dial it back just like they dial back their other power plants. Grid tied solar just wants to sell all it can and is uncontrolled.

What does this have to do with off grid? Get some batteries and let the power company take their ball and go home.
