An outbreak of "mouse fever" in Russia.

Rospotrebnadzor records a sharp increase in the incidence of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Over 10 months of 2025, more than 3,300 people were infected โ€” this is 1.5 times more than a year ago.

-More than 80% of those infected are urban residents;
-In the Urals, the number of cases has tripled, and in a number of regions โ€” by 2-3 times;

The reason is a warm autumn and winter: rodents are more active, and there are more contacts.

Back at the dacha in deep winter. Minus nine outside, nearly forty by the stove. Frozen water containers, mice, snow that never stops falling โ€” and still the house holds its heat like a living thing once you learn its rhythm. Off-grid life isnโ€™t about comfort, itโ€™s about adaptation, patience, and small wins earned one log at a time.

Full story on Substack.

Due to the heavy snowstorm, 452 flights have already been delayed or canceled at Moscow airports.

Those who are supposed to clear the snow in the capital have themselves got stuck in a snowdrift on the road.

Even the electric trains were buried in snowdrifts

No such problems in the middle of nowhere for me! ๐Ÿ˜

That steel plate is heated to over 500ยฐC!! May need to back off the logs a bit

Snowstorm causing power outages? No problem! With a bit of ingenuity, you can still get your fix of Stranger Things Season 5!! ๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿค˜๐Ÿค˜

Thankfully replacing the batteries in the Uninterruptible Power Supply was really straightforward and nowhere near as expensive as I feared.

โšก UPS Autopsy: What Killed My CyberPower CP1500EPFCLCD in a Russian Village โšก

Greetings from off-grid Russia! My "pure sine wave" UPS died a slow, painful death after months of fighting Soviet-era electrical infrastructure. Here's the full autopsy report:

๐Ÿ” The Death Symptoms:

ยท Constant relay clicking (every 2-5 minutes)
ยท Rapid on/off cycling without load
Final diagnosis: Thermal system failure (overheated to death)

๐Ÿ”Œ The Murderer: Soviet-Era Electrical Infrastructure

1. Antiquated Soviet screw-in breakers (YAN UAP-16, E27 base)
2. Village power grid with wild voltage swings (90V-250V)
3. No main disconnect in house (utility pole only)
4. 30+ year old aluminum wiring

๐Ÿ’€ How the UPS Was Slowly Killed:

Phase 1: Overwork

ยท Village voltage fluctuates constantly
ยท UPS AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation) works overtime
ยท Each correction = relay click = heat
ยท Pure sine wave generation creates additional heat

Phase 2: Thermal Breakdown

ยท Internal cooling fan failed (Event 443)
ยท Components overheated (Events 441/442)
ยท Temperature sensor fried (Event 444)
ยท Calibration data corrupted (Events 449/450)

Phase 3: Systemic Collapse

ยท Internal communications failed (Event 453)
ยท Factory test mode entered (Event 455)
ยท Factory test failed (Event 457)
ยท Power supply failed (Event 459)
ยท Permanent failure declared (Event 462)

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Root Cause Discovery:
While troubleshooting, I found the real problem:

ยท Soviet breakers had GLOWING CONTACTS (500-800ยฐC!)
ยท High resistance connections causing voltage drops
ยท Arcing and sparking creating power spikes
ยท The UPS was trying to correct power that was fundamentally broken at the source

๐Ÿ’ก Lessons Learned for Off-Grid Russia:

1. UPS โ‰  Voltage Stabilizer
ยท Consumer UPS not designed for daily voltage correction
ยท AVR systems overheat with constant use
2. Isolation is Key
ยท Switched to WATTICO Camp 600 portable power station
ยท Complete isolation from grid = clean power
ยท Battery-first approach for sensitive electronics
3. Fix Infrastructure First
ยท Replacing 30-year-old Soviet breakers (ะŸะะ -16 E27)
ยท Adding 3680J surge protection
ยท Installing power monitoring
4. The Canary in the Coal Mine
ยท The UPS didn't fail randomly
ยท It was warning of dangerous electrical conditions
ยท Could have prevented a potential house fire

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ The Fix in Progress:

ยท Ordering new automatic E27 breakers (ะŸะะ -16)
ยท Adding surge protection (3680J)
ยท Installing power monitor/wattmeter
ยท Using WATTICO for complete isolation
ยท Petitioning electricity company for safe disconnect to replace breakers

๐Ÿ“Š The Cost of "Soviet Reliability":

ยท Dead UPS: $250 value
ยท New breakers & protection: ~3,500โ‚ฝ ($35)
ยท Lesson learned: Priceless

๐ŸŽฏ Moral of the Story:
In Russian villages with Soviet infrastructure, your UPS isn't protecting your equipmentโ€”it's sacrificing itself trying. Fix the root electrical problems first, or any protection equipment will die prematurely.

Winter strips life back to essentials.

Firewood, cold nights, an old house that creaks and hums when something needs attention. Living off-grid doesnโ€™t allow drift or neglect. You notice everything โ€” the heat, the silence, your own limits, and your own rhythm.

This winter has been hard, physical, and quietly transformative. The house is being repaired system by system, and so am I.

The full reflection and Hi Rez video are now live on Substack.

People are abandoning their cars and walking home - the Moscow region has been paralyzed by record snowfall. It's faster to walk than to drive.

Highways are at a standstill. Buses are crawling along. Passengers are getting off right on the road and trudging to their homes. Drivers are staying in their cars and waiting for things to get moving again.

Hundreds of residents are spending 4-5 hours getting to their destinations. Federal highways are also blocked. Dozens of trucks have come to a halt on the Domodedovo highway. Cars and pedestrians are working together to pull the vehicles out of the snow.
