You know what? The dessert names were more than just a cute marketing thing they were part of Android’s soul. Back then, every new version felt playful and community driven, completely different from Apple’s polished but closed off vibe. People actually got excited for names like “Cupcake,” “Donut,” “Eclair,” “Froyo.” It made Android feel like it belonged to hobbyists, tinkerers, and curious users not just big corporations.

But over time, Google changed. Part of it was because Apple’s walled garden was insanely profitable. Apple showed that if you control the whole ecosystem hardware, software, and services you could guarantee stability, security, and make billions off subscriptions. At first, Google mocked Apple for being so locked down, but then they realized that Apple’s approach kept banks, devs, and partners happy, and avoided the chaos of rooted phones, fragmented devices, and endless custom ROMs.

So, Google started locking things down too. SafetyNet (now Play Integrity) started blocking unlocked bootloaders. Suddenly, rooting or modding wasn’t just “at your own risk” it meant losing access to banking apps, PayPal, even Uber. The tradeoff was security and stability, but it cost us freedom. Back in 2012, a rooted Galaxy Nexus running CyanogenMod was your playground. By 2024, it feels like you’re just renting a device from Google with a list of conditions.

That’s why people miss the dessert names. They remind us of when Android felt rebellious, fun, and ours to shape. Now it’s clean, professional, and kind of soulless. Google wanted to win over businesses, banks, and governments, so they copied Apple’s seriousness but in the process, they lost what made Android special.

Don’t get me wrong Android isn’t dead. Billions still use it, and stuff like foldables and affordable phones are areas Apple doesn’t touch. But that “soul” is gone. The tinkering culture, flashing ROMs, the excitement of a candy-themed launch that’s all in the past. For those of us who grew up with that era, it really does feel like watching a friend grow up, put on a suit, and forget where they came from.
