Google’s private browsing doesn’t keep your searches anonymous
New research has found that it doesn’t matter what you do to burst out of Google’s search filter bubble: you can log out of Google, then enter private browsing mode, but those precautions won’t render your search anonymous. Google’s search engine will still tailor results to the personal information the company has on you, including search, browsing and purchase history.

In exchange for free mails, would you let your postman open your letters, read them, and insert ads related to their contents?
This is a common analogy for Gmail’s model. The privacy implications of using Gmail actually go much farther than that, because Gmail is not only your postman (with Gmail), it also owns your car ( your web browser), your address book (with Search), your TV (with YouTube), it’s a great land owner (with AdSense)… And there are many reasons not to trust Google, especially with your privacy.

Filter Bubble – DuckDuckGo Says Chrome Incognito Mode Does not Provide Anonymity
The new report from DuckDuckGo says Google manipulating the search results based on the user personal data and moves the links up and down in search results based on it.
Google’s algorithms put you in a filter bubble based on your search, browsing, and purchase history and show the link you most likely to click on. The filter bubble is more destructive when searching for political topics.

New Bug Prompts Earlier End to Google+ Social Network
Google said Monday it will close the consumer version of its online social network sooner than originally planned due to the discovery of a new software bug.

Delete/disable GApps
https://f-droid.org/app/org.droidtr.deletegapps
This application is used to delete or disable gapps. It uses a regex to find GApps package
- pm disable xxx (xxx is a package name that is found by the application)
or
- rm -rf xxx (xxx is a path name that is found by the application)
It requires root to work.
Don't delete GApps on touchwiz (or similar) stock rom or your device might not boot afterwards. You should try to disable GApps instead!
To re-enable GApps, go to the *Settings › Apps* menu, and chose "restore apps preferences". If you want to reinstall GApps, you should use the OpenGApps zip or GApps installer (third party apps).

SoniControl - building the first ultrasonic firewall
Novel technologies like Google Nearby and Silverpush build upon ultrasonic sounds to exchange information. More and more of our devices communicate via this inaudible communication channel. Ultrasonic communication enables to pair devices, exchange information but also to track users and their behavior across several devices similar to cookies in the web. Every device with a microphone and a speaker is able to send and receive ultrasonic information. The user is usually not aware of this inaudible and hidden data transfer. To overcome this gap, within the project SoniControl we research the current capabilities of ultrasonic communication and raise awareness for this unknown communication channel. To date there is no technology available that detects ultrasonic communication and that enables the user to protect his or her privacy. We develop a mobile application that detects ultrasonic activity, notifies the user and blocks the information on demand. Thereby, we want to raise the awareness for this novel technology and help users to protect their privacy.

How I Quit Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Amazon
A reflection on my month without Apple, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Amazon, plus a how-to guide if you want to quit the biggest companies in tech.
SLAUGHTERHOUSE BIG FIVE:
EVERYTHING WAS UGLY AND NOTHING WORKED
It was just before closing time at a Verizon store in Bushwick, New York last May when I burst through the door, sweaty and exasperated. I had just sprinted—okay I walked, but briskly—from another Verizon outlet a few blocks away in the hopes I’d make it before they closed shop for the night. I was looking for a SIM card that would fit a refurbished 2012 Samsung Galaxy S3 that I had recently purchased on eBay, but the previous three Verizon stores I visited didn’t have any chips that would fit such an old model.
