...- has the same etymology origin as the English "scatche". Scandinavian winters can be both wild, brutal and untamed – referred to 'Dangerous Island' which is a good translation as it was very dangerous for southern people to travel to Scandinavia during winter.

Strabo – a Greek geographer and historian born 63BC, and other historians for a long time believed that Scandinavia was an island by southern people called Skaði's island. Therefore the name Scania, which is the origin of southern parts in Sweden. ↟ Vårdagjämning – Spring Equinox ↟

🇬🇧 - in comment below ⬇️

↟ Snowdrop – Galanthus Nivalis ↟

These white delicate little flowers heralding the promise of Spring and are now piercing through the lingering frost here in Scandinavia. A North European wild flower – one of the very first early flowers to blossom. They are a symbol of hope, purity and quiet resilience, inspired folklore across Europe, used in ideas of purification and protection of home and hearth.

Snowdrops also possess intriguing medical qualities. The bulbs and leaves contain galantamine, an alkaloid that has been shown to slow the progression of Alzimer's disease by temporarily restoring the balance of neurotransmittens in the brain. Thereby, improving memory and cognitive functions. However, it is highly toxic if ingested improperly!

The Snowdrop thrives in gardens and woodlands, bending to the ground...- continues in comment below ⬇️

↟ The Natives of Scandinavia ↟

We are the indigenous people to our Scandinavian homelands. But some people do still believe that the Sámi are the indigenous, which is incorrect accordingly to genetic and archaeological finds and researches. The Sámi was neither first in Scandinavia – it's important to understand the geological and climatological conditions of nature to realise this:

During the last ice age, which lasted until about 12,000–10,000BC, major parts of northern Europe and Scandinavia was covered by a massive ice sheet, a continental glacier several kilometers thick. No human population could exist in the area, as it lacked both vegetation and animal life, and the climate was extremely cold. As the climate got warmer, the ice sheet began to retreat from the southern parts, allowing new areas to become habitable.

The first people who came to...- continues in comment below ⬇️

A påskkärring literally means “Easter old woman” or “Easter witch.”

Today, children in Sweden dress up with: headscarves, aprons and skirts and painted rosy cheeks and freckles and go door-to-door exchanging drawings for sweets/fruits, very similar to Halloween.

At the heart of the tradition is a specific Swedish belief that on Skärtorsdagen (Maundy Thursday) witches would fly on broomsticks to Blåkulla to meet the Devil in a kind of sabbath gathering.

Blåkulla (often identified with the island Blå Jungfrun in Småland, Sweden) became the Nordic equivalent of the German Brocken/Blocksberg, a mythical gathering place of witches.

Sweden experienced intense witch hysteria between 1668 and 1676. This resulted in 280 people executed and widespread fear of witches abducting children and flying to Blåkulla. The imagery we now associate with witches, brooms, sabbaths, devil worship, was shaped heavily during this period, not ancient pagan times.

The påskkärring is partly a cultural memory of the witch panic, softened and turned into play.

The witch activity was believed to peak during Holy Week, especially the night of Judas’ betrayal, a time when “evil was loose in the world”. This idea of witches meeting the Devil reflects Catholic-era beliefs in Scandinavia.

Why does it feel like this could have pagan elements?

Because of the belief in flying spirits or night journeys, a seasonal fear of chaotic forces at spring transition, and the use of fires to ward off harmful beings.

Nonetheless, the påskkärring and Blåkulla are early modern (15th–17th c.) Christian reinterpretations of folk magic. Old folk beliefs existed, but they were filtered through Christian fear and theology.

A Jungian layer here could be that what was once feared (the witch) is ritualised, masked, and integrated into society.

It is important to note that Pre-Christian Europe had ideas of spirit travel and liminal places that Christianity reframed those as demonic gatherings.

A little bit sad. If you decide to dress your little one as a påskkärring today, please do tell them the story origin. 🌝

↟ Dísablót/Disting -an ancient Swedish thing ↟

🌕 Dísablót & Disting is an ancient Germanic Old Norse tradition with major importance, considered to have taken place today this year – at the third full moon after the new moon, after the Winter Solstice in Uppsala, Sweden. The blót was held to show reverence for Spring, to ensure good fertility and harvest for the coming year. Several gods are worshiped, mainly the Dísir – female goddesses of fate in our Norse mythology, whom can be both benevolent and evil. A dís exist for example the night, the wind and the rain – Skaði is sometimes associated with the winter dís.

🌕 Dísablót is one of the most famous blóts and like Hókunótt/Midvinterblot/Julblot also one of the most misunderstood. According to the Heimskringla Saga, this Swedish tradition is 'as old as Heathenry itself'. Disting was taking form of a...- continues in comment below ⬇️

↟ Glad Påsk! 🇸🇪 Skandinaviska barn från Sverige i traditionella folkdräkter från Leksand, Dalarna.

🇬🇧 - in comment below! ⬇️

↟ Sweden in the 1950s 🇸🇪

"The largest and wealthiest country in Scandinavia is Sweden.
Both in size and outline, it resembles the state of California. In the northern two thirds of the country, great forests of pine and spruce, cover almost all of the land. Literally billions of trees cover well over half of Sweden."

Our land was once one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Sweden could still have been what it once was. But, instead our land is systematically being destroyed and we are being replaced in our own country by invaders.

Sweden WILL be what it once was. Never forget what they took from us. Get organised, be prepared and defend our people and land. Sweden will not remain without remigration.

Honor your ancestors, you owe them everything. We have so much to live and fight for!

↟ Scandinavian Americans ↟

In year 1867 to 1869 there was a severe famine in Scandinavia, the last major one in Northern Europe. The bad harvests during these years contributed to a great emigration of Native Scandinavians to America, Vinland – where the soil was more fertile and much land was given for a small amount of money.

During the beginning of the 1860s, Sweden had suffered poor harvests on several occasions, and spring and summer were much colder than usual due to long winters all over Scandinavia. In year 1867, it was still snow in May, and no ships could go through the ice. It was hard to transport and distribute emergency food supplies to the already starving areas. As late as in Midsummer same year, was the first time you could start sowing – that's how cold it really was. The late spring was then followed by a very short summer and an...- continues in comment below ⬇️

↟ Valborg – Majbrasan/Sígrblót ↟

🇬🇧 - in comment below! ⬇️

🇬🇧
Today in Scandinavia it's time for celebration of Valborg/Majbrasan or Mayfestival/Majfest. It's an ancient originally heathen tradition that heralds from the Sígrblót, and we celebrate that Spring now has arrived. The big fire itself has also come to be called "Majbrasa/Maybonfire" which is due to the fact that we at the same time celebrate the month of May – the arrival of Spring.

🌷 Most people associate today's Mayfestival and Valborg celebration with the Catholic Saint Walpurgis from England's 700s. However, this tradition has very little in common with the culture of Saints, Walpurgis has nothing to do with the big fires of Valborg or spring, because it's a continental Germanic tradition of much older origin that scientists today admits is entirely heathen. Also in the Baltics and the rest of the Nordic countries, the celebration of spring and the beginning of summer are held with huge fires to celebrate the Mayfestival and Beltane.

🌷 Up here in the North we mainly honor Freyja at the Majbrasa/Valborg. In the fires of Valborg we see Freyja. She is the greatest of all dísir, the protection goddess of the Vanir – the Vanadís herself. The word or name 'Valborg' comes from the same origin as Valhall(a) and Val-kyrjor, and have nothing to do with Catholicism or Christianity. Freyja is the queen of May whose great time now has come, and she is the most important deity right now – the month of love, when the splendor of nature here in Scandinavia soon will be in full bloom. But May is not only the month of Freyja, we must not forget her brother, the god of honor – Freyj.

🌷 This tradition is also celebrated for practical reasons. At this time of the year the cattle were released on pasture, and to protect the cattle from predators and witches, huge fires were held according to old Swedish folklore. At this time of the year, we clear away the old grass and hay on the fields and meadows. The piles that become were set on fire – we simply clear away the old dead grass and leaves to welcome new life again.

🌷 Today is the birthday of the King of Sweden as well. Carl XVI Gustaf who turns 80 years old, and is the longest reigning monarch in Sweden's history 🇸🇪

Long live the King!
Hail Freyja!

Pleasant Valborg/Sígrblót! 🌷
The traditional song that we sing at the Majbrasa in Sweden is 'The Longing for The Country'.

↟ Segerblot – Sígrblót ↟

🇬🇧 - below ⬇️

Segerblot/Sígrblót (Victoryblót or Sommardag) is an ancient Heathen holiday and the third blót appointed by Odin in the Ynglinga Saga, stanza 8. This blót is disputed when exactly it should have taken place, and not much is recorded about it.

Something that is clear, however, is that the Sígrblót is a blót for prosperity and victory – the victory of the Light over the darkness and cold. Sígrblót falls on the fourth full moon after the Winter Solstice which is today, and is believed to last for three nights. Accordingly to the Icelandic Sagas, blót was custom in Svitjod (Sweden).

When Old Norse Sígrblót actually took place is diffuse, as well as whether one or two blóts were celebrated during Spring. Valborg – The May bonfire/Walpurgis Night may therefore have it's roots in Sígrblót. Sígrblót has also come to be called "Spring Blót", which provides that it's now halfway between Midwinter and Midsummer. Some sources also believe that Sígrblót takes place at the Spring Equinox, others at the May Bonfire. Hail victory!
