Dualism in Gnosticism is the belief that reality is fundamentally divided between two opposing principles: a transcendent, unknowable true God associated with spirit, light, and perfection, and an inferior or false creator deity (often called the Demiurge) responsible for the material world, which is viewed as flawed, corrupt, or imprisoning; in this framework, the human being contains a divine spark trapped within physical matter, and salvation comes not through faith alone but through gnosis—direct experiential knowledge of one’s true spiritual origin—which awakens the soul and enables it to escape the material realm and return to the higher spiritual reality.

Scrying is a divination practice in which a person fixes a relaxed, unfocused gaze on a reflective or visually ambiguous surface—such as a mirror, water, crystal, or flame—to induce spontaneous mental imagery, impressions, or symbolic visions that are then interpreted as insight or guidance; psychologically, it works by reducing external sensory input and analytical thinking, allowing the brain’s natural pattern-recognition processes (including pareidolia and projection of subconscious material) to generate meaningful images from ambiguity, while traditional spiritual interpretations hold that the surface acts as a medium or gateway through which information from divine, spiritual, or unseen realms can be perceived.
