I spent about an hour today scaling and gutting sardines until in the end I had a whole row of them lined up ready to grill. Having put so much work in already I decided it'd be a waste not to do the extra and ended up sprinkling with sea salt, olive oil, crushed pepper and then baked ciabatta bread.

It's a small sign that the more in touch you are with the blood and guts of food preparation the more of a ritual it becomes, the more ''special'' you want the end result to be.
