🇺🇸/🇮🇷 NOTE: As they say, ‘the devil is in the details’, and that’s most certainly the case with this Memorandum of Understanding

Is there a practical mechanism to ensure U.S. forces leave the region, or is it just a vague committment?

Will there be a release of frozen funds? If yes, how many — and when will they be released?

Will the U.S. grant Iran temporary oil sanctions waivers for the duration of the remaining negotiations?

But perhaps most importantly, it will be key whether Iran’s reopening of Hormuz includes the collection of tolls and abiding by the Iranian maritime traffic separation scheme.

If Iran is allowed to collect tolls and ships have to get Iranian permission to pass the Strait, that’s a major American concession and practically grants Iran sovereignty over the Strait.

But if Iran has agreed to temporarily shelf the idea of toll collection, this MoU is less favorable. As I said, details matter a lot, this all means nothing yet.

Pakis, Saudis, and Qataris expect that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and America could be announced as soon as tomorrow.

I urge everyone to exercise caution.

– End of regional war on all fronts, including Lebanon.

– Freeing several billions of dollars of Iran's frozen assets.

– Lifting the U.S. naval blockade.

– Opening the Strait of Hormuz under ‘Iranian management’ (unclear if there will be tolls)

– Withdrawal of the majority of American forces from the Middle East.

After this, the two sides will have 30 days to find an agreement on the nuclear issue, but this timeframe can be extended if mutually agreed.

🇺🇸/🇮🇷 Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei:

‘In the Roman mind, Rome was the undisputed center of the world. Yet the Iranians shattered that illusion.

When Marcus Julius Philippus (Philip the Arab) marched east against Persia, the campaign did not result in Roman victory — it ended in a peace established on Sasanian terms: the emperor had to come to terms!’

🇺🇸/🇮🇷 Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency:

‘Based on the latest exchanged text, in the event of signing a Memorandum of Understanding, the Strait of Hormuz will remain under Iranian management.

Although Iran has agreed to allow the number of passing ships to return to pre-war levels, this in no way means ‘free passage’ to the pre-war status-quo.

Accordingly, the management of the strait, route determination, timing, method of passage, and issuance of permits will remain exclusively under the planning and control of the Islamic Republic of Iran.‘

They’re saying a lot of things, but what they’re not saying is TOLLS.

Management is fun and all, but the only thing that truly matters is tolls.

Have to wait and see.
