Russian energy giant Gazprom will cease delivering gas to Bulgaria on Wednesday, the country’s energy ministry announced on Tuesday.
The news comes after the Saint Petersburg firm confirmed it will also halt supplies to #Poland, with both countries refusing to pay for energy supplies in rubles.
The ministry announced the news in a statement, adding that there would be no imminent need for consumers to ration their gas usage. Bulgaria relies on Russia for around 90% of its gas, with the remainder coming from #Azerbaijan.
Last month, a spokesman for state energy firm #Bulgargaz told reporters that, as of this summer, Azerbaijan will provide the country’s entire supply, albeit at a higher price.
Further ahead, Bulgaria’s government plans to connect the country to a yet-unfinished Liquefied Natural Gas (#LNG) terminal in #Greece, where gas will be imported by ship, likely from the US.
News of the cutoff came shortly after Poland’s state energy compan PGNiG confirmed that it too had received notification from Gazprom that the flow of Russian gas would be shut off on Wednesday. Both countries have refused to pay for Russian gas in rubles, as Moscow has demanded all “unfriendly” countries do as of this week.
Bulgaria’s current 10-year contract with Gazprom was set to expire at the end of this year, but the ministry’s statement said that Bulgargaz would not finish the contract if it had to pay in rubles, stating that the setup “poses significant risks to Bulgaria.”
Several Russian gas buyers have signaled they might be able to agree to Moscow’s demands.
On Monday, #Uniper, #Germany’s major importer of Russian gas, said it would be possible to pay for future supplies without breaching Western sanctions.

Poland’s state-owned energy company #PGNiG has confirmed that Russian energy firm #Gazprom will halt gas deliveries on the Yamal contract as of Wednesday. Earlier reports suggested that the supply from Russia had already been cut off.
According to a statement from the Polish gas firm, “Gazprom informed PGNiG of its intention to completely suspend deliveries under the #Yamal #contract at the beginning of the contract day on April 27.”
On Tuesday, a Gazprom spokesman announced that “today, Poland is obliged to pay for gas supplies in accordance with the new payment procedure,” referring to Russia’s demand that “unfriendly countries” buy its gas in rubles.
Poland has refused to follow this procedure, and on Tuesday sanctioned Gazprom, which owns a 48% stake in the Polish company that co-owns the Yamal-Europe #gas #pipeline. The 4,000km line transports gas from the Yamal Peninsula and western Siberia to #Germany and Poland via #Belarus.
Media reports soon followed, suggesting that the supply to Poland had already been stopped, and that the government in Warsaw had convened a crisis meeting.
PGNiG insisted that supplies to consumers would be uninterrupted, with gas in storage and sourced from other suppliers making up the shortfall.
Poland has been one of the staunchest proponents of the anti-Russia sanctions imposed by the US and EU since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in February, and has allowed Western weapons to enter Ukraine from its territory.
While some gas-dependent countries such as Germany have cautioned the EU against cutting off the flow from Russia, and others like Hungary have stated that they will keep buying Moscow's product, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has vowed to ban all Russian coal, oil and gas imports by the end of the year.

Ukraine - War Aims, Railway Supplies And Incoming Fire
Ukrainian military depends on railways for all long distance mass supplies as it had relatively few logistic #trucks.
#NATO has said it would give the Ukraine dozens of 155mm towed #artillery guns plus tens of thousands of shells with them. The U.S. guns come with one truck each to tow the gun.
Logistics: A 155mm shell plus the powder needed to fire it weighs about 50 kilogram. A three axle military truck can carry 7.5 metric tons or 150 shells. That's about what one or maybe two guns will fire on a good day.
The daily supplies for one gun will require constant traffic of at least 6 trucks plus all the fuel needed to run them. Multiply that with the number of guns NATO supplies.
Lots of trucks the Ukraine does not have. So how will it get all those shells to the frontline?
It won't.
Their artillery is gone.

The 'substations' Russia destroyed are the electric ones which supply the electrified long range train routes.
Ukraine does not have enough #trucks to replace railway logistics and those logistics are now falling apart:

The military investigative bodies of the Russian Federation instigated #criminal proceedings against #Lieutenant #Sergei #Batynsky, deputy commander of the firing support company for educational work of Unit A-2777 of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on suspicion of a crime under Part 1 of Article 356 of the Russian Criminal Code (ill-treatment of civilians).
In April 2022, in #Mariupol, Ukrainian servicemen from the #36th #Marine Brigade detained two civilians, husband and wife, riding bikes past a roadblock. Although they had Ukrainian passports with a registration stamp in #Mariupol, it was decided to place them in the basement.
Later, after drinking alcohol, Batynsky took the detained woman out and threatened to kill her, committing violent sexual acts against her (presumably #rape).
When the husband of the woman tried to stop him, #Batynsky shot and killed the man.

Compared to the situation before the war, the #demand for #rubles has increased, as a growing number of countries now trade in the currency of #Moscow that they did not use before.
So the paradox is that #Russia has an interest in restricting #energy #exports in order to avoid over-strengthening the ruble exchange rate.
#Gas and #oil prices are many times higher than they were 12 months ago, so even with lower sales volumes the same revenue is generated.
