For anyone using any Simple Mobile Tools app be aware that they were sold few days ago (4 dec 2023) to a very privacy unfriendly company:

https://github.com/SimpleMobileTools/General-Discussion/issues/241

Is suggested to remove them or stop updating them.

BTW the company is an israeli publisher that buys apps and fills them with ads asking weekly fees to avoid them...

Someone has made an alternatives list:
https://libreddit.nullnet.services/r/SimpleMobileTools/comments/18929pq/simplemobiletools_was_sold_alternatives/

One of the dev of SMT has forked them:
https://github.com/FossifyOrg

And another group of dev announced a fork too:

OSS Document Scanner

Android Open Source app to #scan all your #documents. You either scan using your camera or by importing an image. The app will automatically detect you document within the photo and will crop the image.

Once the document is created you can detect text within the document using #OCR.

You can also share your document as a #PDF. If you want you can synchronize the app data with a webdav server (like nextloud) to never loose anything!

โšก๏ธMirotalk SFU - A High Quality FOSS Jitsi Competitor?
@takebackourtech

I recently came across MiroTalk SFU, a self-hosted video/audio conferencing software. Developed by Miroslav Pejic, Mirotalk SFU uses WebRTC for real-time a/v streaming and an SFU (Selective Forwarding Unit) architecture.

There are 2 version of the app. A P2P version of the app where browsers connect directly to each other, and the more standard SFU version where a media server is responsible for collecting and distributing a real time stream from each participant.

It already has features like:
- Resolution up to 4K, up to 60 fps speeds
- Echo cancellation / noise supression
- Screen sharing
- Built in chat and reactions
- Collaborative whiteboard
- File sharing
- Video / audio sharing
- Livestreaming in the browser

The public server also allows for 'anonymous' calls without any registration or sign in, something which Jitsi had recently removed due to abuse of the public service.

We've always ran a Jitsi server as part of our professionally hosted privacy services Above Suite (https://abovephone.com/suite), and Mirotalk could be a great addition to this.

Try now:
https://sfu.mirotalk.com
https://p2p.mirotalk.com

Code:

What do y'all think?

Sapio

Open source, crowdsourced app you can get from F-droid which is designed to track and list which android apps will or will not work on a Gapps-free Android device.

Its searchable, per-app list has separate compatibility categories for straight AOSP/vanilla ROMs as well as devices with #microG.

For each one of those categories it will show a color-coded legend:

Green - works with no limitations
Yellow - works with some limitations
Red - Doesn't work at all

You can also contribute to #Sapio by sharing your personal app compatibility experiences. The more submissions they get, the handier this tool becomes for all of us. โ˜บ๏ธ

You can get the app here:

Google's Pixel / GCam is a great, easy to use, feature rich camera app that competes well with the excellent open source Open Camera. GCam brings things like portrait mode, and easy to use slow-motion.

Because of this, there are many developers porting the app to work on as many phones as possible. GCam can increase the performance of your phone's hardware camera, and the ports can also bring the GCam app to DeGoogled phones.

GCam Hub is a website dedicated to tracking all the GCam ports.

Here is the ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป web page listing many Stable GCam Version:

You can work you way through the list until you find one that works on your phone, but then you may try 100 versions and never get one that works.

Keep in mind, these ports will not auto update.

Note: Shamim's SGCAM version 8.5.300 V5 works on Pixel 3a running Lineage.

If you find a version that works on your phone, let everyone know in the comments.

You can log and track the phone locations of your family and friends in complete privacy, using your Nextcloud server.

To do this you need to install the Nextcloud PhoneTrack App on your Nextcloud server, and the Android PhoneTrack App on every DeGoogled phone you want to track.

The F-Droid version is old and buggy.

To get the newer Dev Android version, you:

1. Go to the PhoneTrack Dev GitLab page, scroll down and click the "APK Direct Download" link

2. At top "Pipeline" option, click the Download arrow and select "AssembleDevDebug:archive"

3. This downloads a zip file. Extract the zip and install the APK.

CONNECT ALL PHONES AND TRACK

4. On Nextcloud create a dedicated account for PhoneTracking.

5. Create a PhoneTrack "Session" in the Nextcloud PhoneTrack app.

6. Sign each phone into the Nextcloud PhoneTrack account, and on the phone, add a "PhoneTrack log job" to the Session on Nextcloud.
