โšก๏ธChultrabook, a way to run Windows, Linux, or macOS using alternative firmware
@takebackourtech

You may remember our last post on ChromeOS overtaking the desktop Linux market. I posed the question, how can we take some of the market share back and replace ChromeOS with Linux?

Now the Chultrabook project offers a way to flash your Chromebook's firmware with Coreboot so you can install different operating systems. But be warned, this is not a simple process, some Chromebooks are not supported, and some things may not work properly after the conversion - please read the guide in full. I think its some of the best documentation I've seen.

When installing Linux the following distros are recommended:
Arch Linux
Fedora
OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
Pop!_OS
Debian 12 (Bookworm)

Replace your Chromebook's operating system with one that respects you.

โšก๏ธCreator of Vim, Bram Mooleanaar Passes Away at 62
@takebackourtech

If you're a developer, you may have heard of the Vim text editor, a legendary piece of software that improved on the original vi editor distributed in Unix systems. Released in 1991 and still maintained today, vim is used by millions and remains one of the most popular text editors of all time.

Vim's creator Bram Moolenaar has passed away at 62. His family announced (Google Groups link) his passing on August 5th:

It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that Bram Moolenaar passed away on 3 August 2023.
Bram was suffering from a medical condition that progressed quickly over the last few weeks.

Bram dedicated a large part of his life to VIM and he was very proud of the VIM community that you are all part of.

Bram was also the creator of the 'charityware' concept, where people could only vote on software features if they donated to a charity of the developer's choice.

Check out Bram's personal website to get a feel for who he was.

Rest in peace Bram, and thank you for your service to all of us!

You can get most music and movies through Bittorrents. Here's how you set up qBittorrent for search, and how to set it up to keep yourself off of your ISP's radar.

Click each step to go to a more detailed tutorial for that step.

1. Enable Search
(Watch โ˜๏ธ the video )

2. Require Encryption

3. Use a USA IP Blocklist

4. Limit Number of Connections

5. Limit Connection Speed

6. Use a Different Port at Each Startup

7. Use a VPN with your system
There are so many options
on VPNs. We're not going
to attempt to tackle this.

I have been using these settings for almost 20 years without a VPN, and have never received a cease and desist notice from any ISP. Most tutorials recommend you use a VPN, but you can try these settings, and if your ISP leaves you alone, no need to pay for a VPN. If you get the letter, then you can get a VPN.

Note: You can do the exact same things in Transmission, except search.

Jitsi's official instance now requires you to authenticate with Facebook, Google, or Microsoft to host a call

https://jitsi.org/blog/authentication-on-meet-jit-si/

Jitsi was a quick-and-easy (not to mention private and anonymous) video chat tool for friends and also strangers. Jitsi's killer feature was being a FOSS 1-click, no sign-up call service.

Now you'll have to deploy your own instance if you want to avoid authenticating with Facebook, Google, or Microsoft (Github). But by deploying your own instance, you are effectively no longer anonymous, as you'll need to provide billing info to your host, or provide your home IP so folks can connect to it.

This list is dynamically refreshed and provides a fair amount of alternative servers:

Veilid

Peer-to-peer network for easily sharing various kinds of data.
Veilid is designed with a social dimension in mind, so that each user can have their personal content stored on the network, but also can share that content with other people of their choosing, or with the entire world if they want.
The primary purpose of the Veilid network is to provide the infrastructure for a specific kind of shared data: social media in various forms. That includes light-weight content such as Twitter's tweets or Mastodon's toots, medium-weight content like images and songs, and heavy-weight content like videos. Meta-content such as personal feeds, replies, private messages, and so forth are also intended to run atop Veilid.

Obtainium is available via IzzyOnDroid or GitHub and let's you search for apps directly, or you can enter a URL to an app's project, where it grabs the latest APK, and installs it. Then it will check periodically for updates & install those as soon as they pop up.

It is the fastest way to get the latest version of an app, & completely bypasses all the app stores.

This can be good or bad. Good because you get apps you can't get anywhere else, and the latest versions sooner. Bad because you don't have anyone verifying the safeness of the file.

FFUpdater does the same with web browsers and OrBot. If you use Obtainium for other apps, you can use it for your browsers as well, and get rid of FFUpdater to free up resources.

Obtainium supports many App sources, including but not limited to:
- GitHub
- GitLab
- IzzyOnDroid
- F-Droid
- APKPure
- APKMirror

Obtainium is in pre-release, & isn't the most user friendly app, so it may take a while to learn. Don't give up!

Meshenger is a P2P Android phone app that started out as a demo for community mesh networks.

Meshenger started out as an idea to promote off the grid mesh networks and has now reached its initial goal. In this talk I will talk about the idea behind it, the story how it came to be and of course how it works.
