‘Unsettled’: A Top Obama Scientist Becomes a Climate Truth Teller | The American Spectator
Steven Koonin reclaims the science of climate crisis from the propaganda peddlers.
Physicist Steven Koonin kicks the hornet’s nest right out of the gate in “Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What it Doesn’t, and Why it Matters.” In the book’s first sentences he asserts that “the Science” about our planet’s climate is anything but “settled.”
Dr. Koonin points out scientific facts supported by hard data and peer-reviewed literature that stand against the reigning climate change narrative: Humans have had no detectable impact on hurricanes over the past century; Greenland’s ice sheet isn’t shrinking any more rapidly today than it was eighty years ago; tornado frequency and severity is not trending up; the number and severity of droughts is not rising over time; the extent of global fires has been trending significantly downward; the rate of sea-level rise has not accelerated; global crop yields are rising, not falling; and the models on which approximately all public policy proposals are based are fatally flawed.
Indeed, one of the most surprising and important lessons of Unsettled is that many claims propagated by the media, politicians, and “scientists,” usually of the left, based on the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), are not found in the reports themselves or represent views or conclusions that the studies explicitly say are held with “low confidence.” Yet the alarmists nevertheless contort these reports to tell us that we’re all going to die unless we bankrupt our children, make fuel unaffordable, transfer billions of dollars from U.S. taxpayers to Africa and Asia in pursuit of “climate justice,” stop driving cars, and otherwise eliminate the very things that have made modern human life the safest and most comfortable it’s ever been.
It’s important to know a little about the more than eminently qualified Dr. Koonin: Physics undergrad at CalTech, where he studied with Richard Feynman, one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century. MIT Ph.D. in theoretical physics. Professor of theoretical physics and university provost at Caltech. Author of more than 200 academic papers. Chief Scientist at BP focusing on alternative and renewable energy. Undersecretary for Science in the Obama administration. Currently teaching at NYU. In other words, Koonin is 1) the real deal and 2) not a conservative or a “denier.” He served under a President who famously tweeted, “Ninety-seven percent of scientists agree: Climate change is real, man-made and dangerous.” And this is precisely what Koonin’s book testifies against.
Throughout Unsettled, you’ll become unsettled by the brazenness of the lies and misdirection used by those who support the Green New Deal, carbon taxes, painting your roof white, eliminating meat from our diets, forcing you to ride a bike to work, take public transportation, and on and on and on. Ten days ago, billionaire Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk asked his 80 million Twitter followers, “What should be done?” in the fight to defend free speech from Big Tech censorship and suppression:
“Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy,” Musk tweeted. “What should be done?”
A hint of his answer was revealed today when it was reported that Elon Musk had purchased a 9.2% stake in Twitter worth nearly $3 billion, making him the largest shareholder in the company. Notably, it’s more than quadruple the 2.25% position of founder Jack Dorsey, the FT reported.
“Musk could try to take a more aggressive stance here on Twitter,” Wedbush analyst Dan Ives told CNBC on Monday. “This eventually could lead to some sort of buyout.”
“This makes sense given what Musk has at least been talking about, at least from a social media perspective,” Ives said.
On March 25th, Musk polled users and found that 70% believe that Twitter demonstrates contempt for the First Amendment. “The consequences of this poll will be important,” he added. “Please vote carefully.”
It turns out he wasn’t bluffing.

Zuckerbucks by Executive Order: Biden Is Working to Turn Taxpayer Funded Election Offices Into Democrat Get Out the Vote Ops | The Federalist
Biden is trying to turn government into a get-out-the-vote operation for his own political party. After failing to pass federal legislation to federalize control of the elections through Congress, and after states passed election integrity bills of their own, Obama’s puppet president is attempting a very quiet federal election takeover using an executive order to redirect federal tax dollars toward voting blocs that are expected to heavily support Democratic candidates.
One year ago, the Oval Office issued Executive Order 14019, which demanded that more than a dozen federal agencies register new voters and “promote voter participation.” The list of agencies ranged from the Department of Education to the Department of Homeland Security.
The average American does not think of federal agencies as responsible for voter registration and get out the vote efforts, and very few details have been released about the order’s implementation. This is by design — when politicians aren’t bragging, they are usually hiding.
In this case, the Biden administration is hiding an effort to require federal agencies to work with partisan private groups to strategically boost voter turnout in areas that would benefit Democrats. This order tips the scales to favor one party at every level of our representative democracy.
This is like the “Zuckerbucks” election scam that funneled millions of private dollars into Democrat-favored districts during the 2020 election. But rather than Facebook’s founder funding it, taxpayers would.
Now, as state legislatures pass election integrity laws to make sure the Zuckerberg scandal never happens again, Biden is taking action to ensure it will happen again and on an even bigger scale in Democrat strongholds.
If there was ever any doubt this executive order was politically driven, the text of the order aligns almost exactly with the policy recommendation from a December 2020 report produced by the far-left activist group Demos. According to the order, the heads of federal agencies will be tasked with promoting voter registration and voter participation. These activities reach far beyond their stated missions.
Soon after the White House issued the order, Demos published a document discussing how the Biden administration could best implement it. Even more concerning is that the two Demos officials who helped draft the group’s original recommendation are now working for the White House.
K. Sabeel Rahman, the former president of Demos, is now President Biden’s senior counselor for the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, and Chiraag Bains, who was Demos’ director of legal strategies, now reports directly to Biden’s director of the U.S. Domestic Policy Council, Susan Rice.
Even after a year, efforts to discover whether the administration is following Demos’ advice have so far hit dead ends. The Foundation for Government Accountability filed FOIA requests with multiple agencies about their compliance with the executive order but has yet to receive details about their plans.
Biden is weaponizing federal agencies to achieve partisan goals that he can’t accomplish through traditional legislative means. This behavior mocks our system of checks and balances and threatens the future of our democracy.

Twitter Gives Elon a Board Seat So He Doesn’t Take Over the Company - Elon Pledges to ‘Make Significant Improvements’
Twitter said it plans to appoint Tesla CEO Elon Musk to its board of directors a day after he disclosed a 9.2% stake in the social-media firm BUT seeks to limit his stake to less than 15% as a condition. The WSJ writes:
“Under the agreement, Musk is prohibited from amassing more than 14.9% of Twitter’s stock as long as he remains a director of the board — forestalling the possibility for at least the next two years that the mega-billionaire, who currently has a net worth of more than $300 billion, will mount an effort to take over the company.”

Twitter said it plans to appoint Tesla CEO Elon Musk to its board of directors a day after he disclosed a 9.2% stake in the social-media firm BUT seeks to limit his stake to less than 15% as a condition. The WSJ writes:
“Under the agreement, Musk is prohibited from amassing more than 14.9% of Twitter’s stock as long as he remains a director of the board — forestalling the possibility for at least the next two years that the mega-billionaire, who currently has a net worth of more than $300 billion, will mount an effort to take over the company.”

Beware: Anti-BigTech Legislation Has a Free Speech Poison Pill | Revolver
Just two decades ago, most Americans worried little about the size and power of Big Tech. They were the most innovative and successful U.S. companies on the world stage, as well as powerful engines for jobs and economic growth, so why interfere? Now, though, Americans know better. It is increasingly obvious that the American people’s freedoms end where the power of tech megacorporations begins.
Superficially, Big Tech is one of the only issues where the right and left of America have some degree of unity: Both dislike Big Tech’s sheer power and would prefer to scale it back. As a result, there is a good chance that two antitrust bills currently under consideration in Congress will actually pass, instead of going nowhere like the vast majority of legislation.
But Americans should not be misled. These two bills, the Open App Markets Act and the American Innovation and Choice Online Act (AICOA), are highly flawed, and unless they are improved before passage, instead of fixing the censorship threat of Big Tech they would make it more robust than ever before.
For nationalists, populists, conservatives, and dissidents of all stripes, the single biggest problem with tech is not its size, but how effectively it can exploit chokepoints to shut down dissident speech. In theory, both of these bills could strike a major blow against censorship and in favor of free speech and freedom of association. Instead, both bills contain loopholes that allow tech giants to keep exercising the same monopoly powers they always have, as long as it is in the name of “safety.”
• Open App Markets: “a covered company shall not be in violation of section 3 for an action that is—(A) necessary to achieve user privacy, security, or digital safety…“
• AICOA: “It shall be an affirmative defense to an action under paragraph (1), (2), or (3) of subsection (a) if the defendant establishes by a preponderance of the evidence that the conduct was narrowly tailored, nonpretextual, and reasonably necessary to—(B) protect safety, user privacy, the security of nonpublic data, or the security of the covered platform…”
Neither bill actually defines what “safety” is, but the word is already well-established in the tech world as a euphemism for “censorship.” YouTube’s calls its content moderation division YouTube Trust and Safety; Twitter’s moderation advisory group is the Twitter Trust and Safety Council; the World Economic Forum’s initiative to increase digital censorship is titled Advancing Global Digital Content Safety; in the U.K., Boris Johnson’s new bill to combat “disinformation and misinformation” online is called the Online Safety Bill. When Apple banned Parler after January 6, it was to stop “threats to people’s safety.” When Amazon followed behind and kicked Parler off Amazon Web Services, it was because the company “poses a very real risk to public safety.”
If these vague loopholes remain in place, then instead of using Big Tech antitrust to empower dissidents, these bills will give them explicit approval from Congress to continue censorship in the guise of safety.
The fix, fortunately, is straightforward: embed the First Amendment in the law. Just as the government cannot suppress political speech on the grounds that it endangers “safety,” neither should the powerful corporations that increasingly exercise quasi-governmental powers of their own. Republicans should fight to add text which makes it clear that “safety” can never be used as a mere pretext for censorship: explicitly state that tech giants can never engage in deplatforming or censorship over speech that is protected by the First Amendment.
With that simple change, antitrust will become a real tool for restoring and protecting dissident speech in America.

Rep. Fred Upton, one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach President Donald Trump in January 2021, has decided to retire rather than seek reelection in 2022, Politico reported.
Upton is the fourth of those 10 to retire, joining Reps. Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), John Katko (R-N.Y.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) in exiting Congress. The six remaining never-Trumpers have primary challengers:
