ChatGPT was prompted to recreate the exact same image 200 times with zero changes.
At first, the results stay close to the original. But with each generation, small errors in faces, proportions, lighting, and identity begin to stack up.
By the end, the output has drifted so far that it turns into entirely different people.
This happens because the model is not copying pixels. Each image is a fresh reinterpretation based on patterns it learned previously.
When those reinterpretations are repeatedly fed back into the system, the noise compounds instead of correcting itself.
Researchers call this phenomenon model collapse.
It’s a real example of what happens when an AI trains on its own outputs instead of fresh, diverse real-world data.
Accuracy breaks down, structure erodes, and the system spirals into something it was never intended to produce.
