Well, first:

a) it depends from country to country!!!!!!!!! In Switzerland for example to study economics, health, food technology, etc. YOU NEED TO WASTE 1 YEAR BEFORE starting to study such things! exactly like if you wish to study at ETHZ or somewhere else!

b) a Bachelor is not just 3 years! there are Bachelor with 4 years! For example Vollzeit (6 Semester), Teilzeit (8 Semester) but even Bachelor NOT offering a 3 year option at all! https://perma.cc/5NFV-R5FE

c) students can fail / need to repeat the year or whatever: for example ETHZ "Das Bachelor-Studium ist auf eine Regelstudienzeit von drei Jahren (6 Semestern) ausgerichtet. Die maximal
zulässige Studiendauer beträgt fünf Jahre" and remember around 30-50% of all students will not pass exams!

Remember that in Switzerland you can fail mostly just once!!!! Means if you fail 2x the last course in a Master, you will lose 5 years or more!
