Catholic benedectine oblates are kinda interesting. You basically can get affiliated with monasteries, but don't make vows of chastity, povery, etc. So while folks who enter can't become monks, if an engineer were to join, we'd basically get a techno-oblate. And the guy might even get himself a black robe, so that it doesn't match that of a monk
