Seán was only part time in the FCA (formed during WW2) but he moved quickly up the ranks as he was selected to be a sergeant and soon after for officer training to which he passed, being the first in his class and was “above average” in his ability to instruct.

He applied to the army authorities to form an Irish speaking platoon and had been given the go ahead but this sadly did not materialise as he could not get enough people interested. A lot of the ordinary soldiers in infantry units wouldn’t have had a lot of education, so it would have been difficult to interest them in learning Irish notes Fogerty.

It is estimated that an average of 3 children in every classroom speak a language other than English or Irish at home.

One school in North Inner City Dublin has over 30 different Nationalities where over 90% of the students speak more than one language at home (again.. it isn't English and Irish) and so they need to buddy kids up to act as translators for each other.
