2018:

''Newstalk heard that there have been several muggings in the last few weeks in the Clontarf area. In one incident, two teenagers were chased through the Conquer Hill road area

One local admitted to Newstalk that the perpetrators were African and that they were big lads, “obviously coming in here from other areas

Mosney, a Direct Povision centre for asylum seekers is nearby Balbriggan and many former residents have settled in the seaside town and surrounding areas. When pregnant women started flying into Dublin to take advantage of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 granting a constitutional right to citizenship through birth, many were housed in new housing developments near Blanchardstown.

In 2015, the racial tension in Balbriggan was highlighted on FM104 when a video of a brawl between black and white school children went viral.

Ethnic background is rarely highlighted in media reports on incidents involving Africans who live in Ireland and often locals are too scared to mention it for fear of being branded racist.

When 700 Balbriggan residents protested outside the Garda station in November 2017, they referred to “anti-social groups” terrorising the town but they were still accused of racism by some people.

African gang activity is given so little coverage in the mainstream media, Newstalk host Matt Cooper recently told artist Kevin Sharkey who had brought the issue up that it was the first time he had heard about the problem and doubted his claims.

Local councillor Damian O’ Farrell said Clontarf’s recent mugging problem wasn’t unique and similar incidents had occurred in Malahide, Portmarnock and Howth which are all close by.

Indeed, African gangs from Balbriggan went on a mugging rampage and beat-up several youngsters in Portmarnock & Malahide on Halloween (2017).

A pregnant lady who intervened in the assault of one child was told that her baby “would be cut out of her”. A source told Dublin Live that the towns were chosen over a lack of Garda presence.

While the ethnic background of the muggers was not mentioned in the report explicitly, the pregnant woman was quoted that she had been told by one gang member that she was ‘just giving us hassle because we’re black’

Several locals told how the gangs used social media to organise their rampage, even bragging to their victims online about how easy it is to organise “posh-bashing” sprees.

The rampage in Portmarnock and Malahide on Halloween wasn’t the first time African gangs in Dublin have organised for violence in a town with no Garda station. Shoppers had to flee in terror last year in Donabate when 100 gang rivals clashed.

In January of this year, the town of Lusk were forced into lock-down when a 100 strong African gang invaded the village, throwing stones at buses and smashed up property.

In west Dublin, Irish vigilantes were suspected of taking matters into their own hands after a number of taxi & delivery drivers were robbed by African gangs when one home in Tyrrelstown was fire-bombed twice in the same weekend.

A 16 year old who attacked and robbed a delivery man in what a judge described as an “extremely vicious and mindless assault” was given a four-year suspended sentence in October. His youth prevented him being named but the Journal revealed his parents had moved to Ireland from the Congo.

Though Gardaí have a low presence in many towns they have been using sophisticated methods to catch criminals. In November, they used thermal imaging from a helicopter to catch two African muggers who had robbed a man with a long steak knife in Lusk after they hid under some brambles during a chase.''
