Brits are more proud of the creation of the NHS than the world wars, the abolition of slavery and the signing of the Magna Carta. Brits are also more proud of the Health Service than their own national history and culture.

Post-War Britain is such a weird and depressing place. A government health provider is basically the sole object of national pride.

Irelands legendary mythological tale; Táin Bó Cuailgne or The Cattle Raid of Cooley in English is now available on Cartlann.org. The oldest epic in Western Europe, An Táin captures the ethos of Ancient Ireland and it's people, translated into English by…
Ernie O'Malley in ''The Singing Flame'' - book about his experiences in the Civil War - describing when Free State Troops were searching his safehouse - where he was hiding in a hidden room behind a wardrobe - kneeling on one knee with a revolver in hand to pray for courage and thought about Cuchulain in the Táin as the house was being searched

''And when Cuchulain saw the feats Ferdia had performed, he said to Laeg his charioteer: ‘If defeat be my lot this day, do thou prick me on and taunt me and speak evil to me, so that the more my spirit and anger shall rise in me.’
Lmfao - Ernie O'Malley accidentally shot Áine O' Rahilly, sister of "The O'Rahilly” - in the chin during the confusion of the darkness and she pretty much just tried to smile at him to keep going and nevermind it haha
Ernie O'Malley describing the moment during his escape when he was shot 3 times - each time he was shot the tough bastard kept trying to continue.

He was hit over twenty times (three bullets remained lodged in his back for the remainder of his life).

A priest gave him Holy Communion + anointed him with sacred oil, he was given a little whiskey to which Sheila Humphrey's commented ''You’re certainly the most lively wounded man I’ve ever seen.’
Ernie O'Malley on the arrest of Erskine Childers during the Civil War.

The Free State made up propaganda of Erskine being an English spy due to his English heritage - Ernie tried to defend Erskine outlining all he had done for the Irish Nation against the barrage of insults being thrown against him by Free State Guards in the barracks he was held captive in but most of the guards were ex-British Soliders / WW1 Vets not IRA men & they bought into the propaganda to which Ernie notes

''I heard men in the ward quoting Churchill''

as Churchill in a speech the day after his capture, had ‘seen with satisfaction that the mischief-making murderous renegade, Erskine Childers, has been captured’.

Four young lads were then executed by the Free State followed by Erskine later as the new laws were brought in to execute any man with arms to try crush the Civil War and as a response to the killing of Michael Collins.

Sadly too, the gun that Erskine Childer's was executed for possessing was a gift from Michael Collins
