"The warm handclasp of every hand, and the fervent 'God and his Blessed mother protect you'...I knew that unworthy though I was, I was identified in the people's eyes with the men of '98 and '48...who had written their names in letters of gold on the dark pages of Irish history"

L.J Walsh recounts his experiences as an IRA Volunteer in 'On my keeping, and in theirs; a record of experiences "on the run," in Derry gaol, and in Ballykinlar internment camp'

Nine nationalists protested Dundalk's 1910 celebration of the proclamation of George V as King, and were jeered by the crowd. Within a decade, an Irish republic had been declared. History is changed by determined minorities. 🇮🇪 'Always it is the many who…
"The faithful few who strove to keep the torch burning in those dark days—the torch handed down from Tone and Emmet— were met on every side with derision. To suggest that the men in these days were prepared to die for Ireland moved the mockery of the professional politician.

...years of Anglicisation, corruption, and the insidious lowering of National ideals probably unexampled in our annals. All the dominant forces in Irish public life stood for cowardice, compromise, and corruption. All faith in lofty ideals, in patriotism or self-sacrifice seemed to have vanished. A horrible cynicism reigned everywhere....Suddenly the Volunteers sprang into being, and the first signs appeared of a change in atmosphere."

An tÓglách (Official organ of the IRA) writing in 1919 on the years prior to the founding of the Volunteers. 15/1/19

"It is a new Ireland we are fighting for today, not an aged, tired, cynical Ireland but a young, full-blooded vigorous Éire, full of hope, courage, and enthusiasm.

....Let each man do his best to be a faithful and efficient soldier of the Army of Ireland, an Army without fear."

Quick thought post:

Pro-Treaty Side was reasonable in that we couldn’t have beaten England in conventional open war due to fact we didn't have manufacturing base or a navy.

However, the Anti Treaty side was right that the terms & attachments of Treaty would slowly kill the rekindled National spirit that had came to being from 1916.

By this, it means the National Spirit would die if the Irish Nation were to then in December 1921 revert back to engaging in parliamentary politics - in 1918 the Irish Volunteers had ditched the Irish Parliamentary Party/Redmondites for this very reason - that a new rekindled National spirit had been awoken.

The Anti Treaty side became vindicated in this if we see the history of after the Treaty. The first 10 years with Cumann na nGaedheal were all about maintaining the status quo with the Treaty and to not do anything to shake it - as well as recovering from the Civil War and its social/economic consequences. I do believe had Collins and Griffith lived (esp Collins from his 1922 writings), this government would have been different - but that was not meant to be.

Dev’s Fianna Fáil from 1932 and for the next 20+ years was all about overturning terms of the Treaty, finally done when Ireland was declared a Republic in 1948 excluding Partition.

This 20+ years of playing parliamentary politics to overturn terms of the Treaty one by one slowly dampened & squashed the National Vigor generated from the 1916 - 1922 Revolutionary era.

Due to focusing on parliamentary politics and the failure of economic program during the 1950s (I will cover this another day), the national flame sparked during 1916 was dim and when the Northern Troubles came to remind us to rebuild the fire - the Free State decided to stamp out the flame and forget it happened in the first place.

This stamping out of the fire began in the 1960s when the Irish intelligentsia began iconoclastic debunking of our Revolutionary history and sneering at the National Idea - a rejection of an Irish-Ireland. This was due mostly to the economic failures of the State in the 1950s causing continual emigration, language revival failures and because of the breakout of the Troubles to which the Free State decided to look the other way and let the British deal with it via sending in their troops - ceasing the any irredentism that was alive in the 1950/60s. Desmond Fennell covers this best and I'll do posts on it - but I have covered this toxic Revisionism before.

Some names to look into are Ruth Dudley Edwards, Conor Cruise O’Brien and the Garrett Fitzgerald administration to see actors in this. All playing different roles in chipping away stones set in 1916.

“Gael, O Gael ! O name most dear,
Wish I've none but that to hear :
Should a quick death be my bale,
Tis for great love of the Gael”

- Verse of poem St Colmcille (521 - 597 AD) presented as a gift to Irish visitors of Iona, full poem in link

“and it will help the observer to understand Irish nationalism to remember that these fervent words date back to before St Augustine's mission to England or the rise of Mahomet.”

- Aodh de Blácam on this verse

“Behind the stress and the confusion there stands in Ireland an Idea, a daemon, a vision of national destiny, a thing that no material reverses can subdue : this is the inner reality of the Irish Question yesterday and to-day.”

- Aodh de Blácam, What Sinn Féin Stands For, 1921.

On that thought post above, please read these four pages which are part of the introduction to Desmond Fennell's 'The State of the Nation - Ireland Since the Sixties' which he wrote in 1983.

Desmond Fennell should be held up in higher esteem if we were a serious nation, man has been calling it since the 60s in some of his books. Some of his books including one shown here as in this Irish Books Channel.

For the first time since the end of the 17th Century, there are now more Catholics than Protestants in the six counties.

The Northern state was set up as a Protestant state for a Protestant people to maintain a Protestant majority - now that’s gone.

Demography is destiny, which Sinn Féin know for Partition but clearly not when it comes to multiculturalism which threatens the whole nation.

Looking further in, it appears to be a massive Nothingburger as deeper dive into the results proves the main driver of demographic change in the North is immigration.

Funny how it’s good to gloat about demographics when it comes to whites vs it’s bad/racist etc to complain about when you’re being swamped by Browns.

Almost the entire increase of the Catholic population in past 20 years has been immigration itself (Poles, Filipinos, Lithuanians, Portuguese etc). The fertility rate is well below replacement level, 1.71 in 2019 and falling off a cliff.

Belfast is the best possible example for where demographics are actually headed. The Catholic population in that city actually stagnated in proportion from 2011, whereas the foreign-born population is now 10% and the non-white population has doubled to 3.3%.

"No man who deserts his own literature for another’s can hope for the highest rank...Let it be the work of the literary societies to teach to the writers on the one hand, and to the readers...that there is no nationality without literature, no literature without nationality."
