“Finish each day before you begin the next, & interpose a solid wall of sleep between the two.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Most of us undervalue the benefits of sleep, but it’s one of the few assets in our lives that’s totally free & absolutely essential to wellbeing. It’s also... a fundamental tool in preventing brain decay.
...Both laboratory & clinical studies have shown that virtually every system in the body is effected by the quality & amount of sleep we get, especially the brain. Among the proven benefits, sleep can dictate how much we eat, how fast our metabolism runs, how fat or thin we get, whether we can fight off infections, how creative & insightful we can be, how well we can cope with stress, how quickly we can process information & learn new things, & how well we can organize & store memories.”
- Dr. David Perlmutter, M.D.

“To me, true health... is achieved by following the laws of nature; when you break them, illness results. Health is not something bestowed on you by beneficent nature at birth; it is achieved and maintained only by active participation in well-defined rules of healthy living - rules which you may be disregarding every day.”

‘...Eating carrots, an excellent source of betacarotene, is probably superior to taking betacarotene alone; eating collard greens - which contain lots of vitamin C - is probably better than taking vitamin C alone - and eating endive, a good source of vitamin E, is probably better than taking vitamin E in capsules. I mean that eating a carrot that contains a fixed amount of the nutrient betacarotene will probably provide more - betacarotene nutritional benefit than taking the same fixed amount of - betacarotene in the purest, most concentrated, most natural betacarotene supplement you can find. Why? Synergy.’

“A return to traditional foods is a way of taking power away from the multinationals and giving it back to the artisans. The kind of food processing that makes food more nutritious is the same kind of food processing that the farmer or the farming community can do: sour milk (yogurt, kefir...), aged cheeses, pickles, sausages, broth, and beverages. All the boxed, bottled and frozen products in modern supermarkets - the cheerios, crackers, cookies, egg-beaters, margarines, diet sodas and TV dinners - have made fortunes for a few and impoverished the rest of us. The way we eat determines not only how healthy we will be, but what kind of economy we have - the kind where a few people make millions and millions of dollars or the kind where millions of people make a decent living... there will be no future unless that technology is tamed to the service of wise ancestral foodways.”

Our ancestors understood that having a healthy mind in a healthy body was foundational to every other part of life, and that the progression of learning proceeded from there, recognizing the interconnectedness of each area of mastery.
