SOLAR ECLIPSE & PERSEID METEORS LIGHT UP THE SKY — METEORS CAUGHT ON CAMERA NEAR PLANE! 🌑☄️✈️

It's a cosmic double-feature tonight — the only total solar eclipse of 2026 coincides with the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, making August 12 one of the most astronomically packed days of the year.

The Moon will pass directly between Earth and the Sun, completely blocking the Sun for observers in the path of totality — parts of Spain, Iceland, Greenland, and northern Siberia. For Europe, this is especially significant: it's the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Europe since 1999, and Spain's first since 1905.

The path of totality runs from northern Russia across the Arctic, tracking along eastern Greenland and the western fringes of Iceland, before crossing the North Atlantic and reaching northern Spain shortly before sunset. In Spain, totality will peak between 8:26 PM and 8:33 PM local time, depending on location — but it won't last long, only about a minute. A partial eclipse will be visible across much of Europe, parts of North America, and northwestern Africa, with major cities like Madrid, London, and Paris seeing at least 90% coverage.

For those in the path, the greatest duration of totality will last up to 2 minutes, depending on location. And with the Sun sitting low on the horizon in western Europe, viewers may witness the rare spectacle of a solar eclipse coinciding with sunset.

The Perseid meteor shower also reaches its peak on August 12, with a stunning celestial display alongside the eclipse. And this year, conditions couldn't be more ideal. With a New Moon at 0% illumination, the skies will be exceptionally dark — no moonlight to wash out the show.

For the best meteor views, experts recommend escaping city lights between 2:00 AM and 4:30 AM local time. Look toward the northeast near the constellation Perseus, but these meteors can streak across any part of the sky.

Under clear, dark skies, the Perseids can produce dozens of meteors per hour, with some estimates reaching 50–100 under ideal conditions. What sets them apart is their vibrant, multicolored beauty. Traveling at a blazing 132,000 mph (212,000 km/h), these tiny particles compress the air as they enter our atmosphere, exciting atoms to release distinct colors: red from oxygen and nitrogen, yellow-gold from iron, violet from calcium, orange from sodium, and blue-green from magnesium. Since these fragments often contain multiple elements, they can shift colors mid-flight, creating brilliant fireballs and long, glowing trails!
