A journalist once conducted a survey at an airport. โWhat do you think is the worst thing in the world?โ was the question.
People gave different answers:
war, poverty, betrayal, disease.
There was also a Zen monk in the airport hall. The journalist, noticing the Buddhist robe, asked the monk the same question. But, the monk replied with a counter-question:
- Who are you?
- I - John Smith.
- No, that's the name, but who are you?
- I'm a TV reporter, for such and such a company.
- NO. This is work, but who are you?
- I am a human!
- No, it's your biological species, but who are you?
The reporter finally understood what the monk meant and froze with his mouth open, unable to say anything.
The monk said:
"This is the worst thing in the worldโฆnot knowing who you areโ
