2017
Morroco – Invited Speaker– 61st ISI World Statistics Conference.
In this conference I talked about “The Challenges of Improving Data and Statistical Literacy in Developing Countries” in one of the ISI invited sessions. It was held in the beautiful city Marrakech from 16 to 21 July 2017. In this conference I had an interesting lesson learned and I talked about it in our session. We were participating in a ceremony of cultural attraction in the third day and in a very beautiful place out of town. When we wanted to leave the ceremony to our hotels, there were 10 buses each allocated for about three hotels. There were many participants and they didn’t leave all at the same time, but the buses were supposed to move all together. We were waiting in our bus for a long time and the bus was almost full but the manager said that I could not allow you to leave because I should make sure that no one is left behind. People waited with obvious impatience in the buses and I started to suggest a new plan to that manager. I told him what if you don’t divide the buses based on hotels and let them leave when they get full one after another. The first one will move sooner but it would have more probability to go to the farthest hotel and the last one will have the least passengers and also less probability to go so far. As the result in average, all drivers get home at more or less the same time and people can get to their hotels without waiting. He listened carefully and asked for a while to think about it. Finally, he ordered our bus and one another to move but he forgot to make them full! It was a good experience of a real problem in the real world, suggestion of scientists and final action of a manager! I hope no one was left behind that night and if so, it was not my fault!

In this faculty of Business and Economics, I talked about “New Technologies in Banking Information Management”. It was started with data literacy and statistical literacy and continued by discussing the role of new technologies such as Big Data, machine learning, data science, IoT and Blockchain in European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and European Statistical System (ESS) under the supervision of European Statistical Forum (ESF). In this speech, I received valuable feedbacks from audience which completely showed the high quality of students in this prestigious faculty.

This talk was happened because of a kind invitation of one of the professors of the school to talk about data science in banking and how to use non-traditional data sources such as mobile data for risk management. I also discussed how we are going to use artificial intelligence to make a smart BOT to talk with people interactively as a virtual assistant and helps loan-providers for credit scoring of new unbanked clients who has no financial credit history.

In Finance session of this conference, I talked about “Mining Big Data in Statistical Systems of Monetary and Financial Institutions”. The topic refers to some emerging Big Data sources in banking systems such as core banking and payment systems and their applications in monitoring different kind of risks. How to deal with imbalance learning under the pressure of rapid changes in compliance were the major issues discussed in this presentation. Distinguishing dynamic frauds and intrusion detections in complex information systems of banks is not any more a dream by using the right data sources, machine learning techniques and right infrastructures of banking information management. It was really my pleasure to meet many professionals in this conference and also DevStat as one the best consultancy and research companies in Europe. I found Valencia stunningly beautiful and one of the most cultural cities of Spain. I also visited DevStat and get impressed with their activities and projects in data and information management and statistical systems.
