B6, magnesium and zinc are required to convert LA to GLA . The enzyme FADS2 is also needed. If you have a condition called porphyria/pyrroluria, you will have decreased amounts of B6 and magnesium, inhibiting your ability to get enough GLA. Variants in FADS2 downregulating the conversion will also pose some problems!
Here's where things get more complicated with fats. Variants in the genes that move fats along will effect how well you can make DHA ... the brain is about 50% DHA! That's how important these genes are to neuro health. Diet and supplementation with healthy fats like fish oil, and flax seed are just a piece of the puzzle.
