๐ŸŽ„Merry Christmas ๐ŸŽ„

/GBG/ wishes all its readers Merry Christmas and a happy new year

This year has been rather quiet although that does not mean things are improving or that they are not changing, we have been covering news and debunking propagands since the Evros Crisis of 2020 and hope to continue doing so in the future as well

๐Ÿ”ด Turkish lawyer involved with illegal sale of property in Occupied Cyprus arrested in Italy
>https://archive.is/oG1i3

๐Ÿ”ธ A warrant was issued against the Turk, Hakan kurshat, by Cyprus in 2007 as the lawyer was connected to the illegal sale of properties in Occupied Cyprus to foreigners or Turkish occupiers. Other Turks were also involved and now avoid traveling to Europe so they wont get arrested

๐Ÿ”ธ Hakan Kurshat was arrested in Rome on December 30 and is being held by the Italian police pending extradition to the Republic of Cyprus to face trial

๐Ÿ”ธ "If Kurshat is not released or if the Italian authorities hand him over to the Greek Cypriot administration, the reputation of the tdvk (pseudocracy) will be damaged and unrest will be caused among the Turkish Cypriots . Furthermore, these arrests will continue" - said the president of the Nationalist Democratic Party of Occupied Cyprus while criticizing the government for not taking any actions after the arrest

The number of illegal immigrants that entered Europe in 2023 is the highest since 2016
>https://archive.is/b57qU

๐Ÿ”ธ According with FRONTEX (not very trustworthy) the number of illegal immigrants entering the EU in 2023 rose 17% compared to 2022, the highest since 2016, the total was of about 380 000 illegal immigrants (detected), 41% of which entered Europe through the Central Mediterranean

๐Ÿ”ธ The data released confirms a trend of steady growth over the past three years

โ€ผ๏ธ Syria, Guinea and Afghanistan are the top three nationalities with the most illegal immigrants BUT only represent 30% of the arrivals

โ€ผ๏ธ Only 10% are minors

โ€ผ๏ธ Only another 10% are women

๐Ÿ”ธ UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) launched its first appeal to raise $7.9 billion to boost its efforts to protect illegal immigrants, limit the 'displacement of civilians' and 'expand legal migration routes'

๐Ÿ”ธ "There is strong evidence that migration, when properly regulated, contributes greatly to global prosperity and progress [...] Above all (this money) will help expand IOM's development work, which will help it prevent further displacement" โ€” Amy Pope, head of the IOM

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ทโ˜ฆ๏ธโŒ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ Greek Church Condemns Bill to Legalise Same-Sex Marriage

The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece unanimously agreed at a meeting on Tuesday that it is โ€œstrongly opposedโ€ to the Greek governmentโ€™s promised bill on same-sex marriage and adoption.

โ€œThe initiators of the bill and those who agree with it are promoting the abolition of fatherhood and motherhood and their transformation into neutral parenthood, the disappearance of gender roles within the family and the placing of the sexual choices of homosexual adults above the interests of future children,โ€ the Holy Synod said in a press release.

The conservative New Democracy government has promised to bring forward a bill allowing same-sex civil marriages, although it is still unclear when it will be tabled.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told the Greek public broadcaster ERT that the bill will also give same-sex couples the right to adopt, but not to have children through surrogacy.

๐Ÿ”ด Greek Ministry of Immigration calls for increased policing in immigrant camps
>https://archive.is/l9tM7

๐Ÿ”ธ The Ministry wrote a letter calling for the increase of Policing in immigration camps due to juvenile delinquency surge among immigrants

โ€ผ๏ธ Sadly most of the letter's proposal ask for half measures, most of them being 'more education', 'more professional supervision of minors' and many other "solutions" that have nothing to do with preventing or punishing wrongdoing

-/GBG/-
๐ŸŸข The current Greek Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Daniel Esdras, is the former head of the UN's IOM (International Organization of Migration) and ever since he was appointed as a minister, the reports and actions of the immigration ministry have become a lot more permissive and contribute more to increase immigration rather than to prevent it

๐Ÿ”ธ After Greek farmers blocked roads in Thessaloniki (second largest city in the country) and many other farmer groups blocked roads in smaller municipalities, the government has agreed to dialogue as long as there are no more roadblocks

โ€ผ๏ธ Most blockades were very short, lasting at best a couple of hours

๐Ÿ”ธ The first Blockade was in Larissa on Tuesday. The Thessaloniki - Neo Moudania road was also blocked. Farmers used tractors to breach a police barrier in Egnatia Road to block it

โ€ผ๏ธ The gov of Larissa denied even discussing the demands, farmers then proceeded to burn straw bales, pallets and tires

๐Ÿ”ด After a fight at an immigrant camp in Serres, immigrants threw rocks at the ambulance

๐Ÿ”ธ Recently riots and fights have become very common in immigrant camps in Greece, this week started with yet another fight, two immigrants were injured

โ€ผ๏ธ As soon as the ambulance arrived, it was attacked with rocks, damaging the vehicle and causing injury to the driver who was later also examined

๐ŸŸข It's impressive how society tolerates the existence of these camps in Greece, from destruction of olive groves, destruction of virgin forests to build more camps, crime increase and endless violence both inside and outside the camps. All of it paid by honest citizens, allowing their taxpayer money to be wasted with people who hate Greece, Greeks and contribute nothing to this great country

๐Ÿ”ด Turkey reschedules conversion of Chora Church into a mosque
>https://archive.is/hZst1

๐Ÿ”ธ The official conversion of Chora was scheduled for the 23rd of February, when the first muslim prayer would be conducted, but the Turkish state recently denied it

๐Ÿ”ธ The new announcement says the 'restoration' is in its final stages and that the Church will be dedicated for Islamic worship by May of 2024

โ€ผ๏ธ The church of Agios Sotiros in Chora, the catholicon of what was once a monastic complex, dates from the 6th AD. The most elaborate mosaics and frescoes were created from 1305 to 1320

โ€ผ๏ธ It is the monument with the most elaborate Byzantine mosaics in Constantinople, along with Hagia Sofia and the Monastery of Pammakaristos

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท It was converted into a mosque in 1511 and later in 1945 into a museum, with Erdogan announcing in 2019 that it would become a mosque

๐Ÿ”ด Gavdos, the Greek Lampedusa?

๐Ÿ”ธ Gerd Heller from Deutsche Welle, points out that recent numbers show that the Greek island of Gavdos, south of Crete, has become popular among immigrant smugglers. The island is under the administration of Chania, a region of the island of Crete.

๐Ÿ”ธ The number of illegal immigrants aiming for Crete has increased in the first weeks of 2024, out of those illegal immigrants, most of them arrived in Gavdos and were then transferred to Crete.

โ€ผ๏ธ 612 illegal immigrants arrived in Gavdos within the first 7 weeks of the year

โ€ผ๏ธ
The island has a total native population of 120 residents

๐Ÿ”ธ Crete/Gavdos is not only targeted by north african smugglers but it is also a place where smugglers from Turkey choose to go in case their journey from the Turkish coast towards Italy does not go as planned or simply as a way to save resources while delivering the immigrants to Europe

๐Ÿ”ธ The operation was named Task Force Wave, and had around 600 police officers in total working on it

๐Ÿ”ธ The gang smuggled immigrants from continental Europe to the UK

โ€ผ๏ธ 28 locations in Germany were raided and 12 boats
๐Ÿ”บ179 life jackets and dozens of children's jackets seized
๐Ÿ”บ 11 outboard motors
๐Ÿ”บ 10 engines
๐Ÿ”บ almost 60 electronic devices
โš ๏ธ Firearms were also seized

โ€ผ๏ธ The leader of the Iraqi-Kurdish Gang along with five other high rank individuals have been arrested

๐Ÿ”ธ A total of 19 people were arrested

๐Ÿ”ธ The gang bought cheap inflatable boats from China and imported them to Germany in a complex operation, they transported the boats by car to Belgium where they would transport immigrants

โ€ผ๏ธ The gang charged between โ‚ฌ1000 and โ‚ฌ3000 per person

๐Ÿ”ด 2023 broke a 7 year record of Asylum Applications
>https://archive.is/dOkbk

๐Ÿ”ธ According with the EUAA (European Union Agency for Asylum), 2023 broke a 7 year record with over 1.14 million, the most Asylum Applications since 2016 which was considered to be the height of the immigration crisis with 1.3 million between 2015 and 2016

๐Ÿ”ธ Most applicants declared to be Afghans and Syrians. It was a 18% increase from 2022

โ€ผ๏ธ Countries with the most applications:
๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Germany received the most applications - 334,000
๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท France - 167,000
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spain - 162,000

โ€ผ๏ธ Countries with the most applications proportionally
๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡พ Cyprus
๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น Austria
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท Greece

โ€ผ๏ธ Cyprus received the most applications proportionally, 12000, representing 1 for every 78 inhabitants, Germany in comparison, received 1 for every 252 inhabitants. The EU average is 1 for every 400

๐Ÿ”ด 2023 immigration by countries of origin

๐Ÿ”ธ Across Europe, Syrians* made 181 000 Asylum applications, Afghans** followed with 114 000 applications (11% less than in 2022) and Turks have filed 101 000 applications (81% more than 2022, mostly in Germany)

โ€ผ๏ธ The approval rate in 2023 was the highest since 2016, with around 46% of applications being accepted (applicants can appeal and resubmit again while still in Europe, a process that generally takes over two years)

โš ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธ* 80% of applications from so called Syrians are approved, which is why many immigrants claim to be Syrian in order to receive asylum, although they have a few more obstacles to receive citizenship and permanent residency, interviews from as back as 2016 showed Pakistanis and even sub-saharan africans claiming to be Syrians

โš ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธ ** 61% of applications from so called Afghans are approved and they receive refugee status due to supposed persecution by the Taliban

๐Ÿ”ด Almost 5.000 applications for new residency permit in Greece
>https://archive.is/11LGt

๐Ÿ”ธ In 2023, Greece approved the law 5078/2023, which in its article 193 allows that illegal immigrants that had been living in Greece for at least three years prior to the creation of the law can get a Residence Permit as long as they have a Job Offer and clean criminal history

๐Ÿ”ธ According with the reports, until last week over 800 of the 4790 applications had been approved and the rest were still under evaluation

โ€ผ๏ธ The law got into effect in February 2024, therefore in a little over a month there were already 5000 applications

๐Ÿ‘‰ The law itself and even Art. 193 is too extensive to be fully explained in this post since this article alone has 13 paragraphs, the full text of the law can be read here (in Greek)

/GBG/

๐ŸŸข The move looks more like an attempt to get voters and artificially reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the country for the statistics than anything else
