Cabiria is an Italian silent film released on April 18, 1914, directed by Giovanni Pastrone. Set during the Second Punic War (218–201 BC), the film follows the journey of a girl named Cabiria who is separated from her family after the eruption of Mount Etna. Along the way, she is taken to Carthage and becomes caught up in events inspired by the history of the ancient world, including the famous scene in the Temple of Moloch, which became one of the most iconic sequences in the history of cinema.
Although characters such as Cabiria, Fulvius Axilla, and Maciste are fictional, the film’s historical setting draws heavily on the account found in the ancient work Ab Urbe Condita by the Roman historian Livy, as well as other classical sources on the Second Punic War. The film is widely regarded as a landmark in cinema history for its ambitious scale, innovative camera movements, elaborate sets, and lasting influence on later epic films.
