Republican lawmakers took a first step in an effort to shutter the U.S. Department of Education, a move that President-elect Trump called for on the campaign trail.
South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds introduced the Returning Education to Our States Act on Thursday.
The bill would eliminate the Education Department and redistribute all federal programs under the department.
'The federal Department of Education has never educated a single student, and itโs long past time to end this bureaucratic Department that causes more harm than good,' Rounds said.
He argued local control is best when it comes to education.
The proposal comes after Trump called for the department to be closed down in October.

๐ท๐บ The Russian Oreshnik hypersonic missile strike sends "clear message" to the West, an Egyptian general says
๐ฃ "The Russians could use non-hypersonic missiles, meaning those with a speed not exceeding Mach 5, but the very fact of using hypersonic weapons in a theater of war that allows the use of conventional missiles is a very clear signal that Russia has invincible hypersonic weapons," Hisham Al-Halabi, a retired major general of the Egyptian Air Force General Staff, told Sputnik.
He stressed that "Europe and the United States have no means of intercepting" this type of missile.
๐ฃ "So this message is twofold: the non-nuclear warning of a conventional escalation and the longer-term nuclear warning that these missiles could be equipped with tactical nuclear weapons," the general added.
On November 21, Russia deployed a non-nuclear Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile, striking a Ukrainian military industrial facility. While capable of carrying nuclear warheads, this strike used a conventional payload.

Draft agreement includes 60-day transition period during which IDF would withdraw from South Lebanon, Lebanese army would deploy close to border and Hezbollah would move its heavy weapons north of Litani River - publication notes.
Under agreement, U.S.-led oversight committee will monitor implementation and hand assurance letter for Israeli military action against Beirut in case of violations, "if Lebanese Army fails to take action".
