I never read. I just assumed.
I thought paying the ransom meant I just dont have to kill the dude and I get my goods. Apparently I pay him, and he gets my (definitely) 7 mirror shards.

Testing Special Ritual nodes over 200 maps and the results seem off
I love Ritual. There hasn’t been a single league where I didn’t end up running this mechanic at some point. Sooner or later, I always come back to it.
However, for several leagues now I’ve noticed one issue. Maybe it’s just coincidence, but something feels off. Every time I take the two nodes that give “25% increased chance of Ritual Altars with Special Rewards,” I suddenly stop encountering special Rituals altogether.
This league I decided to actually test it. I ran 100 maps without the nodes and 100 maps with them.
It’s not a huge sample size, but the results line up with what I’ve been feeling for a long time:
Tree without the nodes: 16/100 maps with special Rituals
Tree with the nodes: 2/100 maps with special Rituals
I get that RNG is RNG. You could theoretically hit a special Ritual every map, or none at all. But such a huge difference? Going from roughly 1 in 6 maps without the nodes to just 2 maps with them?
Has anyone else experienced something like this? At this point I honestly don’t know if I’ve just been insanely unlucky for multiple leagues, or if there might actually be something going on.
Every map was an 8-mod Jungle Valley, using 2 Scarabs of Selectiveness, 1 Scarab of Wisps, and 2 Scarabs of Abundance, with the same Atlas tree: https://i.imgur.com/QehBxSE.jpeg
For the 100 maps without the nodes, I removed the two Ritual special reward nodes and allocated those points into Beyond or additional Scarab nodes instead.
