🇮🇷 🆘 Alarm in Iran: Emissions from Mount Taftan Cause Concern in Sistan and Baluchestan
⁉️ Gas and steam emissions from the crater of the semi-active volcano Taftan have been causing concern for residents of the Sistan and Baluchestan region in Iran since the end of May. Unpleasant sulfur odors have led to allergic reactions and hospitalizations among residents.
📣 The Director-General of Geology and Mineral Exploration in Zahedan provided an update on the situation. He explained that the observed emissions are most likely the result of recent increases in precipitation and are not associated with traditional magmatic volcanic activity.
However, he emphasized the need for more detailed scientific research to accurately predict possible eruptions. 🌋 Mount Taftan, rising 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level, is the highest mountain in southeastern Iran. This region is known for its geothermal activity, as evidenced by numerous hot springs indicating ongoing underground processes.
📍 Taftan is part of a volcanic arc that also includes the Bazman volcano in Iran and the Koh-i-Sultan volcano in Pakistan, formed as a result of the subduction of the Arabian Plate under Iran in the Makran Trench.
⚠️ Recent emissions have alarmed the public, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation. Monitoring continues to ensure the safety of residents and to mitigate potential risks.
