Most sunspots have a simple magnetic field with two poles: + (plus) and - (minus). Solar spot AR3590 resembles a layered cake with a whole range of positive and negative poles. Opposite magnetic fields, pressed against each other in this way, usually result in the release of energy in the form of bright flares and material ejections.
