There’s something important happening in the Android and open-source ecosystem that more people should be aware of.

A group of developers, organizations, and community members have come together under an initiative called Keep Android Open.

The main goal of this initiative is to protect the openness of Android; especially around custom ROMs, third-party app distribution, and the broader open-source ecosystem. Over time, we’ve seen increasing restrictions, tighter controls, and policy changes that can make life harder for independent developers and FOSS projects.

Android was built on open-source foundations. A big part of what made it powerful was the freedom to modify, distribute, and build upon it. Custom ROMs, alternative app stores, independent developers, all of this exists because Android was open.

But recently, there have been growing concerns about:

- Restrictions affecting third-party app distribution
- Increasing dependency on proprietary services
- Limitations that could impact custom ROM and modding communities
- Policies that may make independent development harder

Keep Android Open is essentially a call to preserve user choice, developer freedom, and fair access within the Android ecosystem.

Now, my personal opinion:

If you care about FOSS, privacy, custom ROMs, or even just having options beyond a single controlled ecosystem, this is something worth paying attention to. Even if you’re not directly affected today, these kinds of shifts shape the future of the platforms we all use.

I’m not saying panic. I’m saying stay informed.

I know the petition might seem kind of pointless/useless, Infact in past I’ve even warned people not to spam it in chats myself during PlayIntegrity, but if bigger developers or well-known alternative app stores, and others stand up and protest together ike F-Droid, IzzyOnDroid, Obtanium did, that could actually make a difference. I’m not talking about the petition alone, and honestly they’ve already done a good job with the open letter and everything they’ve put out so far. I really hope that after some solid criticism Google comes up with a better way to let people install APKs that don’t use Google’s Developer Console APIs.

At the end of the day it’s just a for-profit company, so I don’t have huge expectations from it.

And yes, there’s no need to spam chats with posts like that, as an moderator, I don’t like it either. I hope people will just come across this topic and at least voice their criticism of Google on platforms like X, since many big companies do pay attention to feedback there and sometimes respond to users’ concerns.

I’ve got a small update for you guys.

So Google finally explained things a bit better. Earlier it sounded like sideloading would be heavily restricted, but that’s not exactly the case.

Yes, from 2026 apps will need to be from verified developers to install normally on most devices.

But they also added this “advanced flow” thing.

Basically, you can still install APKs from unverified developers. It’s just not instant anymore. You have to go through some steps like:

- You’ll need to enable developer mode
- Confirm you’re not being forced or tricked
- Restart your device
- Wait around 24 hours
- Then verify again (PIN / fingerprint)
- After that, you can install the app anyway

The good part is this is a one-time setup. You don’t have to repeat it every single time you install something.

After that, you can install normally, just with warnings.

They’re also adding limited distribution accounts for students and hobby devs, so small devs can still share apps with a limited number of users without full verification.

My thoughts

Honestly this feels like Google tried to calm things down after all the backlash.

It’s definitely more restrictive than before, no doubt. But at least sideloading is still there in some form.

Not perfect, but also not the worst case people were expecting.

Let’s just hope they don’t tighten it more later, because that’s where things could actually become a problem.

So yeah, things changed, but not completely ruined.
