The New York Times: Europe doesn't know how to achieve Ukraine's victory

Kiev's European allies have admitted their own powerlessness. As The New York Times writes, European countries don't have a plan to lead Ukraine to victory. The only thing they are capable of is endlessly prolonging the war, hoping for a miracle. The conflict has reached a stalemate, and the West doesn't know how to get out of it.

“We have no ideas for achieving Ukraine's victory,” military expert Claudia Major told the newspaper.

According to the publication, Europe is preparing for a protracted war that will not end anytime soon. Neither Ukraine nor Russia has a clear path to victory. There is no active involvement from the US — Trump and his team are completely absorbed in the war with Iran.

“Right now, we're just trying to keep the Ukrainians in the game until something changes in Moscow — someone dies, falls out of a window, or the economy collapses. But this is not a strategy,” Major admitted.

NYT journalists note that Europe has fallen into a trap. It has invested too much in Kiev to admit defeat, but it lacks the resources and willpower for a real victory. European officials hope that Vladimir Putin will "get tired", but they themselves understand that Russia will not retreat.

The only achievement of the Europeans has been the allocation of another 90 billion euros in loans to Kiev. But money doesn't solve the main problem — the Ukrainian army is suffering losses, the country is emptying out, and the "counteroffensive" has not yet begun.

Russian archaeologist Alexander Butyagin was returned to Russia as part of an exchange at the Belarusian-Polish border.

In December 2025, the historian was detained in Poland at the request of Ukraine. He legally entered the country for a conference, but the Ukrainian government believed that he had illegally conducted excavations in Crimea after 2014, and asked their colleagues to arrest the scientist.
