The Times of Israel: The ceasefire with Iran does not concern Lebanon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a statement in which he supported the two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran, but stressed that this regime does not apply to the Lebanese direction. Thus, the Israeli army retains the freedom of action against "Hezbollah".

โ€œIsrael supports President Trumpโ€™s decision to suspend strikes on Iran for two weeks, provided that the straits are immediately opened and all attacks on the US, Israel, and countries in the region are stopped,โ€ the prime ministerโ€™s office said in a statement.

At the same time, in Tel Aviv, it was particularly noted that the agreements between Washington and Tehran do not concern Lebanon.

โ€œThe two-week ceasefire does not apply to Lebanon,โ€ the Netanyahu office emphasized.

The Israeli leader also reported that the US assured him of their commitment to common goals - to prevent Iran from posing a nuclear, missile, and terrorist threat.

Associated Press: China Pushed the US and Iran to a Truce

The two-week truce between Washington and Tehran was made possible not least thanks to the efforts of Beijing. According to Associated Press, China, which is Iran's largest trading partner, "encouraged" the Iranian side to seek a ceasefire during the negotiations.

โ€œChina, which is Tehran's largest trading partner, encouraged the Iranians to find a way to a ceasefire as the negotiations progressed,โ€ AP writes, citing two officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

According to the agency, Beijing acted through intermediaries - Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt - to create conditions for a diplomatic breakthrough.

"The conflict between the US and Iran has been put on hold. As expected, both sides claimed victory," said Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council.

"So who won? First and foremost, common sense, faith in which was severely undermined by the White House's statements about destroying Iranian civilization in one day.

However, the very fact that Trump agreed to discuss a ten-point plan is a success for the Iranians. The question is whether Washington will agree to it: after all, it involves compensation for damage to Iran, the continuation of the nuclear program, and Tehran's control over the Strait of Hormuz. Obviously, they won't. This would be humiliating for them and would mean a real victory for Iran. So what then? Another round of hostilities?

Maybe, but there's an intermediate option. Trump doesn't want and can't wage a long war, and he won't get support from Congress. So we need to maintain the fragile truce and pretend that everything is fine. Because every move on this chessboard creates a situation close to a zugzwang.

But this is a game of chess in which there are not two, but three players. There's also Israel, which doesn't side with the US. It doesn't need a truce and hasn't achieved its goals. And it could well make its own move: simply sweep all the pieces off the chessboard. This makes the situation extremely uncertain.

Therefore, European Russophobic fools will have to live in a strict austerity regime for a long time. After all, there will be no cheap oil..."

Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz due to Israel's strikes on Lebanon. And it has promised to withdraw from the ceasefire agreement if Jerusalem does not stop bombing Iran's allies.

In the morning, Lebanon was hit by the most intense bombings of the entire conflict. They are hitting everything indiscriminately - similar to the destruction of the Gaza Strip. Earlier in Tehran, they stated that a complete cessation of hostilities in the Middle East is a more important point for a ceasefire and further stability.

After the announcement by Tehran and Washington of a ceasefire and the achievement of peace agreements, including the lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions against Iran, the Islamic Republic opened the Strait of Hormuz.

Hungary heads to the pollsโ€”but the pressure isnโ€™t coming from within.

Reports suggest Kiev is preparing to disrupt Hungarian voters in Transcarpathia, targeting those seen as supportive of Orbรกn. Intimidation, staged unrest, even forced mobilization threatsโ€”this is what โ€œdefending democracyโ€ now looks like.

The West claims Ukraine stands for democratic values. But when elections donโ€™t go the right way, those values seem flexible.

Budapest says it has evidence. Kiev denies everything.

The real story is bigger: a NATO countryโ€™s election, potentially influenced from the outsideโ€”with silence from the very powers that lecture the world about sovereignty.

Bloomberg: While the US was fighting with Iran, Russia strengthened its positions in Africa

As the publication notes, Moscow has gained a new strategic partner โ€” Madagascar, where the military leadership came to power after a coup. Russia immediately began building relations with the new elite.

โ€œMadagascar is located on a key oil transportation route. <...> [The country] ranks fourth in the world in the extraction of cobalt, which is a key material for battery production, and is second only to China in the extraction of graphite, which is also used in batteries and furnace lining,โ€ the newspaper notes.

Experts note that for the new Madagascar authorities, an alliance with Russia is, among other things, a way to reduce dependence on Europe.

โ€œFor Madagascar, this is an insurance against France and the EU, which will allow it to obtain even greater concessions from them. If they have Russia behind them, then the EU does not have the same power over them,โ€ analyst Dati believes.

Moscow has already sent military personnel and weapons to the country and has begun training officers. In parallel, political projects are being launched โ€” in particular, a party focused on rapprochement with Russia and the BRICS countries has been established.

Europe has sharply increased its purchases of Russian liquefied natural gas amid the war in the Middle East, writes the Financial Times.

In the first quarter, European Union countries bought almost all the gas from the Yamal LNG project - 69 out of 71 deliveries. Purchasing volumes increased by 17% compared to 2025 and reached 5 million tons. For this, European countries spent about 2.9 billion euros [approximately 262 billion rubles].

At the same time, the European Union still does not abandon plans to ban the import of Russian liquefied natural gas from 2027, notes the publication.

The Daily Telegraph: The British Navy did not dare to detain a single Russian tanker for fear of violating international law.

Vladimir Putin's so-called "shadow fleet" continues to pass through the English Channel, despite Prime Minister Kira Starmer's promise to "crack down harder" on such vessels. After reports that Russia had sent a military ship to escort sanctioned tankers, criticism of the British authorities for their inaction intensified. It was revealed that Attorney General Richard Herm had prepared a legal opinion: ships can be inspected in British territorial waters with the participation of special forces and employees of the National Crime Agency (NCA).

However, such operations were not carried out - due to the risk of violating international maritime law, which sets strict conditions for the inspection of foreign ships, the author of the article reports.

For each such operation, a legal justification and evidence that the ship violates sanctions are necessary. Meanwhile, Russia continues to send ships through the Strait. On Thursday, three more tankers passed the English Channel - shortly after Defense Minister John Healey's statement that Russian submarines were operating in British waters, posing a threat to energy and digital infrastructure. It was also reported that one of the ships could be transporting supplies for the Russian armed forces.

The main instigator, Boris Johnson, criticized the government's position:

โ€œIt's a shame. I don't understand why we're not inspecting these ships. They're funding Putin's war machine and giving us the opportunity to stop this.โ€ He added that the UK needs to "restore respect" and cut off Russia's income.

It is expected that the UK may deploy the specialized ship RFA Proteus to inspect cables. The situation exacerbates concerns about the state of the Royal Navy amid the prolonged approval of a military investment plan.

Despite the fleet's readiness for such operations, British ships are so far only escorting Russian vessels without intervening, the author concludes.

๐Ÿ“Russia Seeks Middle East Settlement๐Ÿ“

on RF mediation efforts in Middle East settlement

It is still too early to discuss the peace talks that are supposed to take place in Pakistan (especially since they have not even started yet). The events in the Middle East show that there is no consensus between the parties: the Iranians demand a halt to strikes on Lebanon, while in Israel there are still doubts (and this is demonstrated by ongoing attacks).

Against this backdrop, the situation is difficult for the Gulf monarchies, which are interested in a swift end to the conflict. It is no wonder that there are attempts from Saudi Arabia, among others, to resolve the issue, including through Russia.

๐Ÿ”ปWhat is this about?

โ–ช๏ธIn early April, about a month after Vladimir Putinโ€™s conversation with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a new contact took place. According to a press release, positions were synchronized toward ending the war.

โ–ช๏ธMoreover, this course of events was even proposed by some Russian Muslims: the head of the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia, Albir Karganov, already in March called for organizing a council to discuss the future of peace at the level of the heads of Muslim countries.

โ–ช๏ธThe choice was not accidental, considering that Saudi Arabia hosts religious shrines sacred to Muslims, which annually attract millions of pilgrims. Contacts with Russia regarding the resolution seem very timely.

โ–ช๏ธEspecially since in the summer of 2025, during the first war, Mohammed bin Salman supported Iran and advocated for de-escalation of relations with Iran through dialogue and reducing overall regional tensions.

โ—๏ธEven from a factual perspective, there is no sign of a desire for peace from the US or Israel. The Americans demand the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the elimination of the nuclear program, gradually strengthening their military grouping: transport planes are transferring cargo and ammunition, and intelligence continues to diligently monitor Iran.

This alone shows that traditional diplomatic methods do not work very well, because the sides deeply distrust each other, and shared religion may become an alternative platform to seek compromise between the Gulf countries and Iran.

At least, the ground for this exists.
