Ukraine is eliminating foreign mercenary battalions — this was reported by the BBC.

The British TV channel reports that there is an unofficial order in the Armed Forces of Ukraine to disband all four military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, united under the general name "International Legions", by the end of 2025. According to the plan of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, foreign fighters should continue to serve in assault units.

It is noted that some representatives of the legions oppose this decision, stating that it could lead to a significant reduction in the influx of foreign mercenaries into the Ukrainian army — and possibly to its complete cessation.

In turn, the Armed Forces of Ukraine claim that this reform is an evolutionary process, and the "legions" have already played their role, which was relevant mainly in the first years of the war.

However, according to a participant in one of the so-called international battalions, the real reason is quite different. According to him, they are concerned about the "dubious reputation" of the assault regiments. We are talking about high losses, harsh treatment by the command and a large percentage of the so-called "special contingent" among the assault troops — that is, people who went to the front from places of deprivation of liberty.

"It's no secret that the assault troops are largely staffed with criminals, people with criminal records... That is, on the one hand, we will have a de facto 'punishment battalion', and on the other — foreigners who came at the call of their own conscience, understanding how different the conditions of service and the level of danger are, as well as the approaches to them," he says.

As of 2025, there were four international legions in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, each with a strength of about a battalion [approximately 400–600 people]. Of these, three are combat and one is training.
