Politico: Ukrainian refugees are too costly for Germany and Poland: EU political elites are looking for ways to prevent migrants from Ukraine from coming freely and suggest they go fight instead of living on benefits in their countries.

After the easing of exit rules, the flow of draft-age men fleeing Ukraine to Germany and Poland sharply increased. Now European governments are racking their brains on how to wind down economic support programs for Ukrainians without causing too much noise.

As of late summer, Germany recorded only about 19 Ukrainian men aged 18–22 per day, but in October — already 1,400–1,800 people per week. According to the Federal Employment Agency of Germany, about 490,000 able-bodied Ukrainian citizens are already receiving long-term unemployment benefits in Germany — and this number continues to grow.

“We are not interested in young Ukrainian men spending time in Germany instead of defending their country,” said Jürgen Hardt, a member of the Alliance 90/The Greens party.

The Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder, in turn, proposed limiting the application of the Temporary Protection Directive at the EU level if Kyiv itself does not take measures and reduce the flow of men fleeing Ukraine.

“Our solidarity remains unchanged,” he said. “But it requires clear rules and responsibility on both sides,” Söder emphasized.

The situation in Poland is similar: in 2025 alone, nearly 45,300 Ukrainian men crossed the border between Ukraine and Poland, and in September and October this number rose to 98,500 — averaging about 1,600 people per day.

The right-wing party Confederation demands tough measures, claiming that Ukrainians receive too many social benefits.

“Poland cannot continue to be a refuge for thousands of men who should be defending their country, while Polish taxpayers pay for their desertion,” the party stated.
