🇺🇸🤝🇹🇼❗️ — Republican-controlled United States House of Representatives votes in favor of Indo-Pacific Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024 (H.R. 8036) and passes $8.1 billion bill to support Taiwan (Republic of China) and beef up the U.S.'s presence in the Indo-Pacific.

➡️ This bill provides FY2024 supplemental appropriations for the Department of State and the Department of Defense (DOD) to support U.S. allies and activities in the Indo-Pacific region. The bill designates the funding as emergency spending, which is exempt from discretionary spending limits.

➡️ The bill provides funding to DOD and the State Department for purposes such as:

🔴 Providing replacements or reimbursements for defense articles and services that DOD provided to Taiwan and countries that have supported Taiwan,
🔴 Improving the submarine industrial base,
🔴 Unfunded priorities of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command for FY2024,
🔴 Defense Production Act purchases,
🔴 The Foreign Military Financing Program, and
🔴 A contribution to the International Development Association.

➡️ The bill also expands the authorities of the President to transfer defense articles and services from DOD to foreign countries or international organizations.

➡️ The bill provides eight point twelve billion dollars in emergency supplemental appropriations to continue efforts to counter Communist China and ensure a strong deterrence in the region.

✅ 385 Representatives voted in favor (🇺🇸 207 Democrats, 🇺🇸 178 Republicans)
❌ 58 Representatives voted against ( 🇺🇸 0 Democrats, 🇺🇸 34 Republicans)
🤷‍♂️ 1 Voted simply present (🇺🇸 1 Democrat)

🇺🇸❌🇮🇱❗️ — 📰 Axios: U.S. expected to sanction IDF unit for human rights violations in West Bank

➡️ U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to within days announce sanctions against the Israel Defense Forces "Netzah Yehuda" battalion for human rights violations in the occupied West Bank, three U.S. sources with knowledge of the issue told Axios.

➡️ Why it matters: It would be the first time the U.S. imposed sanctions on an Israeli military unit.

➡️ On Thursday, ProPublica reported that a special State Department panel that investigated alleged violations of human rights based on the Leahy law recommended months ago that Blinken disqualify multiple Israeli military and police units that operate in the West Bank from receiving U.S. aid.

➡️ At a press conference in Italy on Friday, Blinken was asked about the recommendation and said he had made determinations based on the panel investigation.

🔴 "You can expect to see them in the days ahead," Blinken said.

➡️ A U.S. official said Blinken's determination about the Netzah Yehuda unit is based on incidents that occurred before the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and all took place in the West Bank.

🇮🇱 Flashback: The Netzah Yehuda battalion was formed as a special unit for ultra-orthodox soldiers. All of its members are men.

🇮🇱 Over the years, the unit stationed in the West Bank became a destination for many "Hilltop Youth" — young radical right wing settlers who weren't accepted into any other combat unit in the IDF.

❗️ The U.S. State Department started investigating the Netzah Yehuda battalion in late 2022 after its soldiers were involved in several incidents of violence against Palestinian civilians, Haaretz reported at the time.
