The Happy Merchant was first created by the American cartoonist "A. Wyatt Mann" (a word play on "A white man"), a pseudonym of Nick Bougas. The image was part of a cartoon that also included a racist caricature of a black man and used these images to say: "Let's face it! A world without Jews and Blacks would be like a world without rats and cockroaches." The cartoon was first released in print in 1992 in the Third Positionist newspaper WAR, but appeared online in February 2001.

WAR was established by Metzger in 1983 as the official publication of the White Aryan Resistance. Even for a neo-Nazi periodical, WAR was regarded by scholars and observers as exceptionally extreme and straightforward in its rhetoric; it openly advocated race war and violent revolution. The newspaper's motto was "The Newspaper of the International White Racist", and later "the most racist newspaper on Earth". It was styled as a tabloid and included numerous cartoons. The newspaper and WAR advocated the Third Position, a type of neo-fascist ideology that adopts left-wing elements, attracting some economically left-wing individuals. Hamm listed it alongside David Duke's NAAWP News as "underground publications promoting grand theories of militarism and white working-class revolt". It promoted environmentalism from a White separatist point of view.

Fascism is a revolutionary ideology of national rebirth that seeks a new ethical and corporative order. MAGA is restorative democratic populism operating inside the liberal system.
