Speaking about Routines

Hey, hey, It’s Wednesday — time to sharpen your pronunciation! Boost your speaking skills and earn rewards for the hall of fame while mastering this weeklytopic's Routine phrases

Phrase of the day

🧐 TO STAY ALERT — to stay alert means to be awake and pay attention to what is happening around you.

Example:

Taking sleep aids such as Ambien doesn’t help staying alert.

Back in 2018, Musk admitted that he was taking Ambien, which some people speculated led to his late-night, chaotic tweets — like the time he tweeted he was taking Tesla private at $420 per share. This caused a massive stir, got him in trouble with the SEC, and even led to Tesla’s board reportedly trying to limit his Twitter use.

It’s a classic case of not staying alert when it matters most. Moral of the story? Maybe don’t mix business with Ambien… or at least stay away from Twitter while doing it.

Hey! It’s Thursday vocabulary time! Speed up your learning of this s2s_weeklytopic’s Routine phrases and earn rewards for the hall of fame

Phrase of the day

To 🔠EAVE LITTLE ROOM FOR (chilling) — not to have time/patience/resources for (chilling)

Example:

Tech giants thrive on data, but their own privacy? They leave little room for their own privacy. Employees at big firms have shared stories of company surveillance, where even their Slack messages or badge swipes are tracked. Ironically, the people building privacy tools sometimes have the least of it themselves!

🔠 On Saturdays we share - and correct - frequent errors we see S2S users make during sessions. We help you not to repeat their mistakes

😒 The Wish is a grammatical trick to say you don't believe something is realistic. You want something so much (eg, to lose weight to become healthier), but think it's impossible

Formula: [wish + Verb in the past (-ed/2d irregular)]

Good and bad examples of how to use the wish formula

I wish I could lose weight (but I think I can't)
NOT I wish I can lose weight

I wish I had more comments (but I think I cannot have more comments)
NOT I wish I have more comments

😏 BUT: We use hope, not wish, when we believe something can really happen in the future

I hope the weather will be fine tomorrow.
NOT I wish the weather will be fine tomorrow.

🔠en Z's Consumption (=buying) Habits

Quick Generation Recap

Baby Boomers: born 1946-64
Millenials: born 1981-96
Zoomers/Zen(eration) Z: born 1997-2012

You well know — they have different lifestyles, mindsets, habits. Different consumption (=buying) habits as well.

Why care? If you work in product development or marketing, you have to care. If you have parents, friends, or children, you also have to care :)

🔠This week, we learn to speak about the consumption habits of Gen Z. There're at the very list 8 of them that set Zoomers apart. You’ll pick up key vocabulary and sharpen your pronunciation.

Tuesday #s2s_vocabulary time. Speed up your learning of this week’s Gen Z’s Consumption Habits phrases

🔠POT (noun) – a small round mark or area on a surface

There is a black spot on the ladybug 🐞 in the picture

ON THE SPOT — immediately; without delay; right at that moment

Turning back to Zoomers and their consumption habits

Zoomers think of offline retail as of a social event — something to do with friends. Shopping offers excitement, but they won’t buy products ON THE SPOT. That shows that malls are increasingly used for marketing rather than storage. The mall that I think best exemplifies this demand for socialising instead of purchasing is Funan in central Singapore, with its climbing wall, esports tournaments.

Want extra points, great karma, and, most importantly, stellar English? Simple:

1 Do the quiz below
2 Tell us what you’ve (or haven’t) bought on the spot recently in comments
