😎 How Scrub Daddy used English words to get $200K

Aaron Krause (a.k.a. Scrub Daddy) got $200K from Shark Lori Greiner, in exchnage for 20% of his business. His pitch became the most viewed one on Shark Tank's YouTube and the sales skyrocketed. Breaking his pitch down to empower you to get heard internationally with your products and services

Scrub Daddy's Full Pitch Transcript
Hi Sharks, I'm Aaron Krause from Philadelphia, and I'm known as the Daddy of the Scrub Daddy—the cutest but most high-tech scrubbing tool in the world. Today, I'm seeking a $100,000 investment in exchange for 10% equity in the Scrub Daddy business.
It's the greatest kitchen scrubbing tool you've ever used because Scrub Daddy completely changes its texture by just adjusting your water temperature. Let me show you how that works.
Here I've got some hot water; here I've got some cold water. When I immerse the Scrub Daddy in the hot and cold water, a complete transformation occurs. Now to show you that, I've got 10-pound weights. Under the 10 pounds, it's soft and compressible—like a sponge, for your general scrubbing applications. But here, check that out: it's hard and firm—that's for heavy-duty scrubbing applications.
We burned on brown and gravy, tomato sauce, cheese, and mustard onto a glass stovetop and a stainless steel pan. I'm going to take the Scrub Daddy, and you're going to see it just attack that burned-on mess, scrubbing it right off. And remember, I'm just using water here—no chemicals at all—and it's going to cut right through that.
It won't scratch any of your surfaces, but it will clean them beautifully. Now, this Scrub Daddy is not really smiling anymore, so I'm going to put him here in the warm water. In just a couple of seconds—voila!—he's back to bright, fresh, and clean every time.
Sharks, that's not just another smiling face. You put it on your hand, you can get to the bottom and clean the sides in one move. And that smiling mouth? That cleans spoons, knives, forks, spatulas—even large serving spoons—on both sides at the same time.
Sharks, with your help, Scrub Daddy will be scrubbing and smiling in every kitchen in the world.

3 Things about ScrubDaddy's use of English
🫧
stated his goals (to be in every kitchen of the world)
🫧
kept his sentences short, simple, conversational (Remember, I'm just using water here)
🫧
used visuals and metaphors (sponge = high tech scrubbing tool; back to bright, fresh, and clean; scrubbing and smiling)

Tech skills VS "Just Words"

The communication gap between tech and business development teams is real. @ybeymlina keeps witnessing that both from her personal experience as a PM at Yandex, founder at Antler, and from learning others' stories. Without tech, there is no product, and without the ability to verbalise your ideas, there're no users

The bearded guy Rick Rubin manifests the power of words, and it's beatiful to watch

Rick Rubin

Produced major albums across genres: Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash (revitalized his career), Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Adele, and more

Co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, started in his NYU dorm room in 1984, pivotal in popularizing* hip-hop

Founder of American Recordings; earned multiple Grammy Awards including Producer of the Year

Known for merging rap with rock; produced Run-DMC and Aerosmith’s "Walk This Way" and Slayer’s "Reign in Blood"

Estimated net worth around $250 million

Renowned for a minimalistic, patient production style focusing on artist authenticity

82 min Blood Lunar Eclipse on 7/9/25 is the longest observed since 2022

Millions of people broke out to the streets to catch the Eclipse. 941K viewed its live coverage from Cyprus by TimeAndDate on YT. @ybeymlina couldn't see anything from Da Nang, only some Vietnamese locals with telescopes on the main square by the ocaean

Like it or not, but astrological events influence decision making not only of housewives, but of major businessmen & politicians

🌘Astrology in Big Politics - Ronald and Nancy Reagan

After the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, First Lady Nancy Reagan began consulting astrologer Joan Quigley regularly. According to Donald Regan's memoir, Quigley advised on the timing of scheduling major presidential events. For example, it is reported that the signing of a U.S.-Soviet treaty on December 8, 1987, was timed to 1:30 p.m. based on astrological advice. Also, the timing of Reagan’s summits with Soviet leader Gorbachev and even delaying his Iran-Contra testimony were influenced by astrology consultations

Common error debugging: "due to"

As S2S users keep discussing astronomy, astrology, and all things beatiful this week, 1 error keeps popping up in different ways. Putting it to a stop, right here, right now

2️⃣ main meanings of “due to”

1. Cause (reason) = “because of” → use “due to + noun/...ing form”
The red colour of the moon is due to blue light scattering

2. Planned/expected = “scheduled for” / “expected to happen” → use “be due to + verb” or "be due + when"
The blood lunar eclipse was due to occur on 7/9/25
My sister is due in September
(pregnant and will give birth in September)

📌 Common Learner Errors

1. Mixing up "due to" and "because"
📌 I was late due to I ordered taxi late
🫧 I was late because I ordered taxi late
🫧 My lateness was due to ordering taxi late

🌼Rule:

“because” goes with a clause (subject + verb, eg I ordered)
“due to” goes with a noun/...ing

2. Forgetting the verb “be” after subject
📌 The delay due to rain
🫧 The delay was due to rain

3. Using “due to” with a subject + verb
📌 The meeting was canceled due to it rained
🫧 The meeting was canceled due to rain
🫧 The meeting was canceled because it rained

4. Confusing the “scheduled” meaning
📌 I’m due to my homework now
🫧 I’m due to finish my homework at 8
🫧 My homework is due at 8 tonight

Own it up:

🧸 - I often make these sort of mistakes
🪴 - I've outgrown these mistakes
🚬 - I don't have an opportunity to speak English and to make these mistakes

And this is Italic /aɪˈtæl.ɪk/ 😅

@ybeymlina received a DM with a complaint about using italicized examples in @EnglishForImpact posts. That complaint was so badly written, that we feel it's our duty to teach you basic English words used in typography

BTW the font we use in Canva is League Spartan

How do you feel about italic? And what's your favorite font? Let's get to know each other at the level that matters 😊

How to be Fluent in Corporate Bullshit

3 S2S users have landed jobs in international teams this year, only to face the struggle: what do their colleagues actually mean? We help you to understand cultures and blend in from day 1

Transcript:
Last time I was job hunting, I applied to over 200 positions. Only once did I hear back from anyone. And that was when a recruiter called me to tell me that he found it unprofessional that I had listed "fluent in corporate bullshit" on the skills in my resume.

My response to that? Well,
I believe that this demonstrates my ability to leverage key synergies while proactively aligning cross-functional deliverables. I'd love to circle back on this to ensure alignment moving forward. Let's touch base ASAP and get some boots on the ground to ensure we have bandwidth.

To which he replied, “Wow, that sounds great actually. When can you come in?”

The Soul of Money | S2S Topic for Discussion this Week

This week's meeting plan is designed around @ybeymlina's favorite book this year. This book shows us that examining our attitudes toward money (earning it, spending it, and giving it away) offers surprising insight into our lives

The breadth and scope of Lynne’s work ranges from working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, to working with refugees in camps in Ethiopia and the threatened rainforests of the Amazon, as well as guiding the philanthropy of some of the world’s wealthiest families and working directly with the women who won the Nobel Peace Prize

Resource
Amazon link to the book

Glossary
🫧attitudes towards money - how people think and feel about money (saving, spending, investing)
🫧breadth and scope of work - how wide and how much the work covers
🫧threatened rainforests - rainforests that are in danger (from logging, farming, or climate change)

🧛 Attention: there will be NO Wednesday Open Practice Zoom meeting this week. We shall resume next week. Text wednesday to @ybeymlina to register - she will respond on Monday
