๐Ÿ˜Š Big 5 Personality Traits & Language Learning

B1-2 learners: your 'lack of talent' isn't why you're stuck. It's your personality. Here's how to hack it.

โ€”โ€”

โš ๏ธ This is a deviation form the usual post schedule
> Why? I've realised the previous framework was quite limiting and stifling. I want to share more.
> What's next? My thoughts out of schedule > Your feedback & post requests > Analyse > Incorporate feedback > Repeat
It takes 2 sides to create the highest quality learning content. We have all the ingrideints (great learners & a great educator): now it's about mixing the two

โ€”โ€”

Back to The Big 5

Over the years, as a teacher and a product manager at Yandex, I've interacted with >hundreds< of English learners. Complaining about their lack of talent for languages.

Is it really about high IQ or mystical 'talent'? The research shows that success in language learning highly correlates with personality traits. The most empirically valid personality test is NOT MBTI (even though MBTI has enjoyed the best marketing adoption). It's Big 5.

Here's how the Big 5 scales correlate with language learning success, ranked from the highest to lowest impact.

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Conscientiousness โ€” Strongest Predictor
Why? Discipline, persistence, and structured study habits lead to long-term retention and consistent practice.

Evidence: Correlates strongly with academic achievement, including grammar mastery and vocabulary growth.

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Openness to Experience โ€” Very Strong Predictor
Why? Curiosity, cultural interest, and cognitive flexibility help with acquiring accents, idioms, and creative language use.

Evidence: Linked to better pronunciation and willingness to experiment with language.

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Extraversion โ€” Moderate Predictor, Context-Dependent
Why? Social engagement boosts speaking fluency but doesnโ€™t always help with grammar or writing.

Evidence: Stronger correlation in oral proficiency than in reading/writing. Introverts may excel in input-based learning (reading/listening).

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธ Emotional Stability (Low Neuroticism) โ€” Moderate-Weak Predictor
Why? Lower anxiety = more risk-taking in speaking, less fear of mistakes.

Evidence: High neuroticism can hinder performance in high-pressure settings (e.g., exams).

โญ๏ธ Agreeableness โ€” Weakest Predictor
Why? Being cooperative helps in group learning but has little direct impact on linguistic skills.

Evidence: Slight link to better communication in social settings, but not a major factor in proficiency.

๐Ÿ’Š Shitty news for adult learners: Openness to New Experience (Very Strong Predictor) goes down with age
๐ŸŒˆ Great news for adult learners: Conscientiousness (Strongest Predictor) goes up with age
๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒˆ Great news for everyone: even though the personality core stays intact thoughout life, personality traits CAN be changed through conscious effort

Shall I write more about how to develop Conscientiousness and/or Openness to New Experience?
Which traits affect your language learning success?

๐Ÿ˜ 5 Signs Youโ€™re Talking Like an NPC

โ˜‘๏ธ Quick checklist: check all boxes that apply

๐Ÿ”ฒ Your answer is shorter than the question ("Yes." / "Not really.")

๐Ÿ”ฒ Zero context added (No why/how/when โ€” just raw facts)

๐Ÿ”ฒ Emotions? Never heard of them ("It was fine." instead of "I had so much fun!")

๐Ÿ”ฒ You wait for others to drag info out of you (Like talking to a brick wall)

๐Ÿฌ Bonus Red Flag
๐Ÿ”ฒ You blame โ€˜vocabulary gapsโ€™ (When itโ€™s really your disengagement).

Results:

If you checked > 3 boxes, your English is being held hostage by NPC syndrome. Break free ๐Ÿ”ช

๐Ÿ“ŒI'm back with the Secret Sauce Behind $39M+ Pitches โ€” ready to apply to your product

1) to get into accelerators
2) to get attention & traction with #buildinpublic posts on LinkedIn

Here's how I came to it. When I left Yandex to launch S2S, I thought getting into accelerators came down to only

1. Revolutionary tech
2. VIP connections

Thatโ€™s why I didnโ€™t even try to apply to accelerators for the first 6 months, before joining Antler HCMC.

Turns out I was wrong. Thereโ€™s the 3d factor that got me an offer from Antler Partner in 1 day, without a draining application process >

3. Pitch Structure & Delivery
one thing more accessible to everyone โ€” words are cheaper and faster to master than tech, right?

After dissecting legendary pitches (and using these frameworks to get into Antler + IC), I'm sharing my the Pitch Bible I've built for myself

Apple 2007 (total funding $5.7B)
Loopt 2008 (total funding $39M)

Remember last weekโ€™s post on the Big 5 Personality Traits and language learning?

Quick recap: The top two traits that impact your learning most are
โœ” Conscientiousness
โœ” Openness to new experience

Today, letโ€™s focus on Openness to new experience:
๐Ÿ˜ Bad news: It tends to decline with age.
๐Ÿ˜Š Good news: You can actively boost it!

Many high-achievers (entrepreneurs, IT pros, executives) dismiss "openness" as fluffy nonsense โ€” "I donโ€™t need fun, I need results."
But science shows the opposite: top innovators and problem-solvers score high in openness.

Why Openness to new experience boost is good for you:
๐Ÿ‘โ€๐Ÿ—จ Gain an edge over colleagues/competitors
๐Ÿ‘โ€๐Ÿ—จ Accelerate language learning
๐Ÿ‘โ€๐Ÿ—จ Enjoy a healthy dopamine boost :)

Swipe the carousel for 3 simple, enjoyable ways to train Opennessโ€”without wasting time.
Bonus: Glossary with vocab from this post on the last slide๐Ÿ’“

We make sure you get input slightly above your level (B1-B2 materials that push you gently) + meaningful conversations (real talks with like-minded people)

To hear it from Krashen himself watch his 15-min explainer (1.3M YouTube views)
