Police Brutality in Jakarta Protests (Killing of Civilians and Suppression of Democracy) has sparked nationwide outrage. On August 28, 2025, thousands of workers and students gathered in Jakarta to demand fair wages, labor reforms, and an end to lawmakers’ excessive privileges. Instead of protection, the police responded with extreme violence—deploying tear gas, water cannons, brute force, and armored vehicles. Over 150 were injured, more than 400 arrested, and one civilian was tragically killed after being run over by a Brimob vehicle.

The protest was centered on the workers’ key demands under “HOSTUM: Hapus Outsourcing, Tolak Upah Murah” (Abolish Outsourcing, Reject Low Wages):
End unfair outsourcing – workers can spend years at a company without security, benefits, or stability. They demand outsourcing be banned for core business functions.
Reject low wages – workers are calling for an 8.5%–10.5% wage increase in 2026, arguing that pay must keep up with inflation and economic growth.
Tax reform for workers – raise the non-taxable income threshold to IDR 7.5 million/month and stop taxing severance pay (pesangon), holiday bonuses (THR), and old-age benefits (JHT).
• Beyond this, they also demand a halt to mass PHK (layoffs), the passage of a new RUU Ketenagakerjaan (Labor Bill), and government support for the RUU Perampasan Aset (Asset Forfeiture Bill).
Instead of addressing these legitimate grievances, the state chose repression. This incident reflects a dangerous pattern in Indonesia: the use of security apparatus not to protect, but to silence. Reports even point to attempts to cover up evidence, including shutting down CCTV in the protest area—normalizing impunity and authoritarian control.

The brutality during this protest is allegedly linked to systemic practices:
• Excessive use of weapons and armored vehicles against unarmed civilians
• The killing of a civilian by a Brimob vehicle, with evidence suppressed
• 400+ arbitrary arrests violating the right to peaceful assembly
• A culture of impunity where perpetrators are rarely held accountable

Indonesia calls itself a democracy, yet when civilians are killed for demanding fair wages and labor justice, it exposes the erosion of democracy and fundamental rights. Police brutality does not bring order—it destroys trust, silences voices, and betrays the very people they are sworn to protect.

This tragedy must not be forgotten. The people’s blood cannot be traded for political silence. The demand is clear: Justice for the victims. Accountability for the police. End brutality. Uphold democracy in Indonesia. #StopPoliceBrutality

Happy birthday to avoidant you, @Orchsid. 🏹🍵

‎Sometimes it breaks my heart to see how unfair the world can be to you. But despite everything you’ve been through, both physically and emotionally, you still shine so brightly, like the sunshine you are. Even on rainy days, you manage to peek through the clouds, you keep breaking through. On your birthday, I wish you find the peace your heart has been searching for. Peace that makes you feel safe. Peace that makes you feel loved. Peace that makes you feel free. It doesn’t matter where it comes from, I just want you to have it, because you deserve nothing less. Do celebrate how far you’ve come. I know you’re often too hard on yourself or too focused on your struggles to see it, but from where I stand, it’s so clear. You’re stronger, smarter, prettier than you give yourself credit for. Go blow the candles out.

‎Truly,
‎P. (#EngFessCelebratesYou)
