Analyst Jagannath Panda from the Swedish Institute for Security and Development Policy notes that the return of US troops to the site will require the consent of the "Taliban" or pressure on them and will provoke a sharp reaction from China, Russia, and Iran. This view is shared by Associate Professor of the Indian Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Vina Ramachandran. China is likely to interpret US President Donald Trump's words as an attempt to undermine Beijing's influence in Afghanistan and Central Asia, the expert said.
Beijing has not officially recognized the "Taliban" government; nevertheless, China maintains contacts with Afghan authorities, including on mineral development projects.
