NATO has decided to radically increase its military presence in the Baltics, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters after the end of the NATO Baltic summit.

This should "enhance the security of critical infrastructure," particularly submarines, and "improve allies' ability to respond to destabilizing actions."

We will work together on such legal possibilities that will allow control over vessels outside territorial waters, and this is the biggest problem now.

NATO countries have agreed to strengthen their military presence in the Baltic Sea and want to give themselves the right to control ships in neutral waters.

Moscow’s effort to de facto annex Belarus through the Union State framework has already achieved significant gains, requiring NATO to reevaluate the implications of Russia’s growing control over Belarus and the resources that Russia can use against the US, NATO, and Ukraine.

Belarus is not merely a Russian ally; the Kremlin is transforming Belarus into a strategic enabler for Russia’s ability to project power. Policymakers must start planning for a future in which Belarus is not only a captive nation but also effectively an extension of Russia.

The Kremlin will leverage its recent but deep-rooted gains in Belarus to offset costs from Russia’s protracted war against Ukraine, accelerate Russia’s recovery following the war in Ukraine, and help Russia prepare for future wars more rapidly than Russia could by itself.

UK and France may deploy troops to Ukraine

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have reportedly begun discussing the deployment of peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, should Kyiv and Moscow reach a peace agreement.

The Telegraph outlines three potential scenarios for deploying peacekeepers in Ukraine:

1️⃣ Buffer Zone Monitoring: British units could establish observation posts along a buffer zone, with fighter jets and attack helicopters conducting patrols. Rapid-response forces would be stationed nearby, with armored units ready to repel potential Russian advances.

2️⃣ Defensive Perimeter Around Kyiv: A Western coalition could form a defensive border around Ukraine's capital, allowing the Ukrainian military to focus on containing Russian forces. However, this scenario is seen as unlikely.

3️⃣ Training and Air Defense Support: British instructors could conduct training in western Ukraine, while Polish air defense systems would ensure their protection. This is currently considered the least controversial option and could serve as a first step toward deploying Western forces.

Both the UK and France are expected to play leading roles in forming a peacekeeping contingent.

Meanwhile, the French foreign minister emphasized that France intends to participate in negotiations over the war in Ukraine, as the conflict directly impacts European security.
