According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), military spending in Central and Western Europe reached $345 billion in 2022, surpassing levels at the end of the Cold War. The pace will only accelerate in 2023–24: the EU plans to spend $500 billion in 2024, up 25% from 2022. NATO requires its members to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense, but countries like Poland are already aiming for 4%, and Lithuania has promised 5%. Germany has set up a $105 billion fund for rearmament, and France is talking about moving to a “war economy.”
