NATO Expands Military Foothold in Europe: New Command Structure
Headquarters Multinational Division Centre (HQ MND-C) (Székesfehérvár, Hungary) officially achieved operational capability on 10 February 2025. Established in 2022, the headquarters is tasked with coordinating NATO military formations in Central Europe.
ℹ️ The headquarters is based on Hungary, Slovakia and Croatia. Poland, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain, Slovenia and Turkey are also involved in its activities.
👤 NATO Deputy Secretary General R. Shekerinska called this step "an important milestone." In her opinion, there is now a command in the region capable of promptly managing the alliance's troops in the event of a crisis in Eastern Europe.
According to the Hungarian Ministry of Defence, the next step will be the transfer of control of the alliance's advanced multinational battle groups stationed in Hungary and Slovakia to the MND-C.
🔴 HQ MND-C is just one of four NATO strongholds in the region, with similar headquarters in Romania (MND-SE), Poland (MND-NE), and Denmark and Latvia (MND-N).
Logically, these structures are united into a European army corps, which is considered as an alternative to NATO on the territory of the EU, but without the participation of the United States in the event of a confrontation with Washington. What is interesting here is that this entails an increase in the national armed forces of the participating countries and requires an increase in staff structures. This is now evident in the example of Poland, which promises to increase not only the number of armed forces to 300 thousand, but also the level of military spending to 5% of GDP.
🗒 But the most important thing is that achieving operational readiness of the said headquarters entails an increase in the combat readiness of troops near the borders of the Union State of Russia and Belarus, which, in turn, is another challenge to national security.
